Rear Brake Drum & Shoes: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove rear hub (dust) cap and nut. See Fig 1 . On type No. 1 drums, remove outer wheel bearing and hub/brake drum assembly. On type No. 2 drums, remove brake drum assembly. On both brake types, remove shoe retainer spring, shoe-to-shoe spring and shoe hold-down spring.
  2. Disconnect parking brake cable from lever. Remove brake shoes with adjuster spring as an assembly, and separate adjuster spring from brake shoes. Remove parking brake lever snap ring, and disengage lever from brake shoe.
