Rocker Arm & Valve Lash Adjuster: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1997 Dodge Avenger, 1997 Chrysler Sebring, 1996 Dodge Avenger, 1996 Chrysler Sebring, and 1995 Dodge Avenger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Rotate camshaft until lobes are in a neutral position, right side at about 60 degrees and left side about 71 degrees. See Figure. Immerse valve lash adjuster in clean diesel fuel. While lightly pushing down inner steel ball using Air Bleed Wire (MD998442), move plunger up and down 4-5 times to bleed air. Insert valve lash adjuster to rocker arm, being careful not to allow diesel fuel to leak out. Install auto lash adjuster retainers to hold valve lash adjusters in position when rocker arms are installed.
  2. To install intake rocker arm assembly, align rocker arm-to-cylinder head oil passages. Ensure flat side of rocker arms are as illustrated. See Fig 4. Temporarily tighten intake rocker shaft bolts so that no intake valve spring is compressed. Insert rocker shaft springs from above and rotate it until it is at a right angle to spark plug tubes. See Fig 5. To install exhaust rocker arm assembly, install rocker shaft springs before installing rocker arm assembly. On all rocker arm assemblies, remove auto lash adjuster retainers.
  3. Apply a small amount of engine oil to lip of NEW camshaft oil seal before installation. On right side, install camshaft oil seal by tapping it into place using Seal Installer (MD998713). On left side, install camshaft oil seal by tapping it into place using Seal Installer (MD998713) and Crankshaft Oil Seal Installer Adaptor (MB991559). On both sides, to complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
