Cylinder Head: Removal

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 6 other vehicles, including the 1997 Dodge Avenger, 1997 Chrysler Sebring, 1996 Dodge Avenger, 1996 Chrysler Sebring, and 1995 Dodge Avenger. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect HO2S connector. Remove front exhaust pipe and gaskets. Remove intake manifold. See INTAKE MANIFOLD . Ensure engine is cool. Drain engine coolant. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect positive battery terminal and remove battery. Remove battery tray. Remove air intake hose. Rotate crankshaft to No. 1 cylinder Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Remove distributor. Disconnect overflow hose. Mark upper and lower radiator hose and hose clamps for installation reference. See Figure.
  2. Remove upper and lower radiator hose. Disconnect heater hoses. Remove heater inlet and outlet pipe assembly. See Figure. Remove thermostat case assembly and remove water inlet pipe assembly. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT .
  3. On left cylinder head, remove cylinder head covers. Disconnect ground cable connection. See Figure. Remove dipstick tube and exhaust manifold stay. Remove cylinder head bolts. Remove cylinder head.
  4. On right cylinder head, remove cylinder head covers. Remove exhaust manifold stay. See Figure. Remove alternator connecting bolts. Remove cylinder head bolts. Remove cylinder head. On either cylinder head, cover cylinder block, to prevent foreign material from entering.
