Removal (Left Cylinder Head)

- Ensure engine is cool. Drain engine coolant. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect positive battery terminal and remove battery. Remove battery tray. Remove air intake hose. Rotate crankshaft to No. 1 cylinder Top Dead Center (TDC) of compression stroke. Remove distributor. Disconnect overflow hose. Mark upper and lower radiator hose and hose clamps for installation reference. See Figure.
- Remove upper and lower radiator hose. Disconnect heater hoses. Remove heater inlet and outlet pipe assembly. Remove thermostat case assembly. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT .
- Remove blow-by hose. Remove PCV valve and hose assembly. Disconnect spark plug cables. On 1996 and 1997 models, remove vacuum pipe and hose assembly. On all models, remove cylinder head cover. Remove relay box bracket assembly. Remove control module and bracket assembly. Remove thrust case. Remove camshaft sprocket. Install Auto Lash Adjuster Retainers (MD998443) to hold valve lash adjusters in position when rocker arms are removed. See Figure. Remove rocker arm and rocker shaft as an assembly. Remove camshaft and camshaft oil seal.
