Inspection Procedure 9 - Engine Idle Speed Is Too High

NOTE: Possible causes are: defective idle air control motor system or defective throttle body.
  1. Using scan tool, check for stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If stored DTCs exist, perform appropriate test procedures for each DTC, and clear DTCs from ECM. If no DTCs exist, go to next step.
  2. Ensure engine coolant temperature is less than 68°F (20°C). Turn ignition on. Listen for operating sound at idle air control motor when ignition is turned off. Idle air control motor is mounted on throttle body and contains a 6-pin Black connector.
  3. If idle air control motor operating sound is heard, go to next step. If idle air control motor operating sound is not heard, check idle control system. Perform DTC TEST NO. 24.
  4. Perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on closed throttle position switch. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE  .
  5. If closed throttle position switch operates correctly, go to next step. If closed switch does not operate correctly, check closed throttle position switch. Perform DTC TEST NO. 25.
  6. Perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on engine coolant temp sensor. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE  .
  7. If engine coolant temperature sensor operates correctly, go to next step. If engine coolant temperature sensor does not operate correctly, check engine coolant temperature sensor circuit. Perform DTC TEST NO. 4.
  8. Using scan tool, perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on A/C switch. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE  .
  9. If A/C switch operates correctly, go to next step. If A/C switch does not operate correctly, check A/C switch and A/C clutch relay system. Perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 28.
  10. Adjust engine idle speed. See procedures in the ADJUSTMENTS - 2.0L & 2.4L article. If engine idle speed still remains too high after attempting to adjust engine idle speed clean throttle body and check adjustment of fixed Speed Adjusting Screw (SAS). See the ADJUSTMENTS - 2.0L & 2.4L article.
