Inspection Procedure 8 - Unstable Engine Idle Speed

NOTE: Possible causes are: defective ignition system, defective idle air control motor system, defective air/fuel ratio control system, defective EVAP system, low compression, excessive air drawn into exhaust system or defective EGR system.
  1. Check if battery was previously disconnected. If battery was not disconnected, go to next step. If battery was disconnected, reconnect battery. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Allow engine to idle for at least 10 minutes, and then recheck engine idle.
  2. Using scan tool, check for stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If stored DTCs exist, perform appropriate test procedures for each DTC, and clear DTCs from ECM. If no DTCs exist, go to next step.
  3. If engine idle speed does not fluctuate excessively, go to next step. If engine idle speed fluctuates excessively, perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 35 under TROUBLE SYMPTOMS.
  4. Ensure engine coolant temperature is less than 68°F (20°C). Turn ignition on. Listen for operating sound at idle air control motor when ignition is turned off. Idle air control motor is mounted on throttle body and contains a 6-pin Black connector.
  5. If idle air control motor operating sound is heard, go to next step. If idle air control motor operating sound is not heard, check idle control system. Perform DTC TEST NO. 24.
  6. Using stethoscope, check for operating sound at injector with engine idling. If injector operating sound is heard, go to next step. If injector operating sound is not heard, check injector circuit. Perform DTC TEST NO. 12.
  7. Perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 36. Once inspection procedure No. 36 is performed and all components are okay, go to next step.
  8. Check ignition timing. See procedures in the ADJUSTMENTS - 2.0L & 2.4L article. If ignition timing is within specification, go to next step. If ignition timing is not correct, check for correct installation of crankshaft position sensor and timing belt cover.
  9. Using scan tool actuator test, check EGR solenoid. See SCAN TOOL ACTUATOR TESTS  .
  10. If EGR solenoid operates correctly when performing scan tool actuator test, go to next step. If EGR solenoid does not operate correctly when performing scan tool actuator test, check EGR solenoid system. Perform DTC TEST NO. 19.
  11. Check for defective ignition coil, spark plugs and spark plug wires. Check for defective EVAP purge control system, defective EGR system, contaminated fuel or low compression. Repair or replace components as necessary.
