Inspection Procedure 3 - Mil Fails To Illuminate When Ignition Is First Turned On

NOTE: For Engine Control Module (ECM) terminal ID, See Figure . For wiring diagram, see the WIRING DIAGRAMS - 2.0L & 2.4L article.
NOTE: Possible causes are: defective MIL bulb, defective MIL wiring circuit or defective ECM.
  1. Using scan tool, perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on power supply voltage for ECM. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE  .
  2. If battery voltage exists when performing scan tool service data inspection, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check power supply and ignition switch (IG) system. Perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 23.
  3. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect 16-pin ECM connector B-54 from ECM. The ECM is located below instrument panel, just in front of center console.
  4. Using jumper wire, ground terminal No. 36 (Green/Red wire) on 16-pin ECM connector B-54. Turn ignition on. Note if MIL is illuminated.
  5. If MIL is not illuminated, go to next step. If MIL is illuminated, check for defective terminals or connections on 16-pin ECM connector B-54. If connector or terminals are defective, repair as necessary. If connectors and terminals are okay, replace ECM.
  6. Check for defective MIL bulb. Replace MIL bulb if defective and recheck MIL operation. If MIL bulb is okay, go to next step.
  7. Ensure ignition is off. Disconnect connector C-06 at rear of instrument cluster. See Fig 1 . Turn ignition on. Using voltmeter, check voltage between ground and terminal No. 10 (Black/White wire) on connector C-06. Battery voltage should exist.
  8. If battery voltage exists, go to next step. If battery voltage does not exist, check power supply on Black/White wire to MIL. See the WIRING DIAGRAMS - 2.0L & 2.4L article.
  9. Check for defective terminals or connections at connectors C-04, C-06 and C-22. See Fig 1 .
  10. If connector or terminals are defective, repair as necessary. If connector and terminals are okay, check wiring harness between instrument cluster and ECM. Repair wiring harness as necessary.
