Inspection Procedure 22 - Engine Has High Co & HC When Idling
NOTE:
Possible causes are: defective air/fuel ratio control system or defective catalytic converter.
- Using scan tool, check for stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If stored DTCs exist, perform appropriate test procedures for each DTC, and clear DTCs from ECM. If no DTCs exist, go to next step.
- Check ignition timing. See procedures in the ADJUSTMENTS - 2.0L & 2.4L article. If ignition timing is within specification, go to next step. If ignition timing is not correct, check for correct installation of crankshaft position sensor and timing belt cover.
- Perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on engine coolant temp sensor. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE .
- If engine coolant temperature sensor operates correctly, go to next step. If engine coolant temperature sensor does not operate correctly, check engine coolant temperature sensor circuit. Perform DTC TEST NO. 4
- Perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on intake air temp sensor. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE .
- If intake air temperature sensor operates correctly, go to next step. If intake air temperature sensor does not operate correctly, check intake air temperature sensor circuit. Perform DTC TEST NO. 3.
- Perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on barometric pressure sensor. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE .
- If barometric pressure sensor operates correctly, go to next step. If barometric pressure sensor does not operate correctly, check barometric pressure sensor circuit. Perform DTC TEST NO. 2.
- Using scan tool, perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on rear oxygen sensor. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE .
- If rear oxygen sensor operates correctly, go to next step. If rear oxygen sensor does not operate correctly, check rear oxygen sensor circuit. Perform DTC TEST NO. 9.
- Using scan tool, perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on front oxygen sensor when suddenly increasing engine RPM. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE .
- If front oxygen sensor operates correctly, go to next step. If front oxygen sensor does not operate correctly, check front oxygen sensor system. Perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 30.
- Perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on front oxygen sensor with engine idling and then increasing engine RPM to 2500 RPM. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE .
- If front oxygen sensor operates correctly, go to next step. If front oxygen sensor does not operate correctly, replace front oxygen sensor. Recheck for trouble symptom. If trouble symptom still exists, go to step 16).
- Check fuel pressure. See procedures in the BASIC TESTING - 2.0L & 2.4L article. If fuel pressure is not within specification, repair fuel system. If fuel pressure is within specification, go to next step.
- Check for defective injector operation and leaking injectors. Check for defective ignition coil, spark plugs and spark plug wires. Check for low compression. Check for defective EGR, PCV and EVAP systems. If all systems are okay, but trouble symptom still exists, replace catalytic converter.
