Inspection Procedure 11 - Engine Stalls At Idle When Engine Is Cold

NOTE: Possible causes are: defective idle air control motor system, defective throttle body, defective fuel injection system or defective ignition system.
  1. Check if battery was previously disconnected. If battery was not disconnected, go to next step. If battery was disconnected, reconnect battery. Start and warm engine to normal operating temperature. Allow engine to idle for at least 10 minutes, and then recheck engine idle.
  2. Using scan tool, check for stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). If stored DTCs exist, perform appropriate test procedures for each DTC, and clear DTCs from ECM. If no DTCs exist, go to next step.
  3. If engine does not stall right after accelerator pedal is released, go to next step. If engine stalls right after accelerator pedal is released, clean throttle body and check adjustment of fixed Speed Adjusting Screw (SAS). See the ADJUSTMENTS - 2.0L & 2.4L article.
  4. If engine idle is stable after engine warm-up, go to next step. If engine idle is not stable after engine warm-up, perform INSPECTION PROCEDURE 8.
  5. Ensure engine coolant temperature is less than 68°F (20°C). Turn ignition on. Listen for operating sound at idle air control motor when ignition is turned off. Idle air control motor is mounted on throttle body and contains a 6-pin Black connector.
  6. If idle air control motor operating sound is heard, go to next step. If idle air control motor operating sound is not heard, check idle control system. Perform DTC TEST NO. 24.
  7. Using stethoscope, check for operating sound at injector with engine idling. If injector operating sound is heard, go to next step. If injector operating sound is not heard, check injector circuit. Perform DTC TEST NO. 12.
  8. Perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on closed throttle position switch. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE  .
  9. If closed throttle position switch operates correctly, go to next step. If closed switch does not operate correctly, check closed throttle position switch system. Perform DTC TEST NO. 25.
  10. Using scan tool, perform scan tool service data inspection procedure on engine coolant temperature sensor. See SCAN TOOL SERVICE DATA INSPECTION PROCEDURE  .
  11. If engine coolant temperature sensor operates correctly, go to next step. If engine coolant temperature sensor does not operate correctly, check engine coolant temperature sensor circuit. Perform DTC TEST NO. 4
  12. Check fuel pressure. See procedures in the BASIC TESTING - 2.0L & 2.4L article. If fuel pressure is not within specification, repair fuel system. If fuel pressure is within specification, go to next step.
  13. Check ignition timing. See procedures in the ADJUSTMENTS - 2.0L & 2.4L article. If ignition timing is within specification, go to next step. If ignition timing is not correct, check for correct installation of crankshaft position sensor and timing belt cover.
  14. Check for defective ignition coil, spark plugs and spark plug wires. Check for low compression and improper oil viscosity. Repair or replace components as necessary.
