Power Rack & Pinion: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Separate rack and pinion from steering shaft. Drain power steering fluid. Disconnect pressure and return hoses from rack and pinion.
  2. Remove cotter pins and castle nuts from tie rod ends. Using Puller (MB990635), separate tie rod ends from knuckles. Remove stabilizer bar stays and mounting brackets. Remove bolt from engine roll damper on centermember. Remove centermember rear mounting bolt. Disconnect front exhaust pipe.
  3. Remove rack and pinion mounting bolts and brackets. Move rack completely to right and remove rack and pinion from crossmember. Using care not to damage tie rod end boots, tilt rack and pinion downward and remove to left.
