Power Rack & Pinion: Disassembly

  1. Remove tie rod boots, tie rods, feed tubes and "O" rings. Remove caulking from pinion end plug and remove end plug. Remove self-locking nut from pinion shaft. See Fig 1 .
  2. Remove locking nut from rack support. Remove rack support cover, spring and rack support. Remove valve housing with pinion shaft.
  3. Using a plastic hammer, gently tap pinion shaft to remove from valve housing. Remove pinion shaft seal from valve housing. Remove sealing rings, ball bearing and oil seal from pinion shaft.
  4. Turn rack stopper clockwise until end of circlip comes out of slot in rack housing. Turn rack stopper counterclockwise to remove circlip.
  5. Carefully clamp rack housing in vise using soft jaws. Slowly pull out rack with rack stopper and rack bushing. Remove "O" ring and oil seal from rack bushing. Remove seal ring and "O" ring from rack.
  6. Using a brass drift, drive ball bearing from gear housing. Using Bearing Remover (MB991120), remove needle roller bearing from rack housing. Using care not to damage inner surface of rack cylinder, use a piece of tubing or similar tool to remove back-up washer/oil seal from rack housing.
