Timing Belts: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove engine undercover. Disconnect power steering hose clamp at front engine mount, near timing belt cover. Place wooden block between jack and oil pan. Raise engine slightly. Remove engine mount assembly near timing belt cover.
  2. Remove clamp for power steering return hose near timing belt cover. Remove all drive belts and tensioner pulley bracket. See Fig 1. Remove power steering, water pump and crankshaft pulleys.
  3. Remove upper and lower front timing belt covers and gaskets. Remove center cover from valve cover. Disconnect spark plug cables. Disconnect hoses at valve cover. Remove valve cover and semi-circular packing at rear of cylinder head.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  rotate crankshaft counterclockwise. Ensure timing marks are aligned and all timing belts are marked for direction of rotation.
  4. Remove rubber plug from rear upper timing belt cover. See Fig 1. Rotate crankshaft clockwise until cylinder No. 1 is at TDC on compression stroke and timing marks on camshaft sprockets aligns with upper surface of cylinder head. Dowel pins should face upward. See Fig 2.

  5. Remove auto tensioner. See Fig 1. If reusing timing belts, mark direction of rotation for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt.
  6. Remove tensioner pulley, tensioner arm and idler pulley. Place wrench on hex area of camshaft, between journals No. 2 and 3, to hold camshaft while removing camshaft sprocket bolt. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts, and remove sprockets.
  7. Remove plug from side of cylinder block, and install a .31" (8.0 mm) diameter Phillips screwdriver to hold left silent shaft. See Fig 3. Remove oil pump sprocket nut, and remove sprocket.
  8. Remove crankshaft sprocket "A" and flange. Remove timing belt "B" tensioner. If reusing timing belt "B", mark direction of belt rotation for reassembly reference. Remove timing belt "B".
  9. Remove right silent shaft sprocket and spacer. Note direction of crankshaft sprocket "B" installation, and remove sprocket. Remove key from crankshaft. Remove engine support bracket. Remove rear timing belt covers.
