Timing Belts: Inspection
- Inspect timing belts for damaged teeth and cracking. Ensure belts are not contaminated with oil. Check tensioners for freedom of rotation and grease leakage. Replace components if damaged or if grease leakage exists.NOTE: Check plug at bottom of auto tensioner. If plug protrudes past tensioner housing, place washer over end of plug before installing tensioner in vise.
- Inspect auto tensioner for leakage and wear at end of rod. Measure rod protrusion from rod end to auto tensioner housing. See Fig 1. Replace auto tensioner if distance is not .47" (12.0 mm).
- Retract rod into tensioner housing by placing auto tensioner assembly in a soft-jawed vise. See Fig 1. Close vise to push rod back into tensioner housing. Replace tensioner assembly if rod can be retracted easily into housing.
