Camshaft & Rocker Arms: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove center cover from valve cover. Disconnect spark plug cables. Disconnect hoses at valve cover. Remove valve cover and semi-circular packing at rear of cylinder head.
  2. Remove the timing belt from the camshaft sprockets. See TIMING BELTS . Disconnect and remove crank angle sensor from rear of intake camshaft. See Fig 1.
  3. If removing camshaft sprockets, place wrench on hex area of camshaft, between journals No. 2 and 3, to hold camshaft while removing camshaft sprocket bolt. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts, and remove sprockets.
    CAUTION: Note direction and location of bearing caps before removing. All bearing caps, except bearing cap No. 1, are numbered for location. All bearing caps are stamped with either an "I" for intake camshaft or an "E" for exhaust camshaft.
  4. Remove front and rear bearing caps and camshaft oil seals. See Fig 1. Remove remaining bearing caps in order: No. 5, 2, 4 and 3. Remove camshaft. Remove rocker arm and lash adjuster. Mark component locations for reassembly reference.
