Rear Wheel Bearing Rotating Torque
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Disconnect axle shaft from companion flange. Remove brake pads or caliper assembly. Attach spring scale to wheel lug stud. See Fig 1
.
- Pull on spring scale at a right angle to stub axle shaft. Rotating starting torque should not exceed 2.6 lbs. (1.18 kg). If rotating starting torque value exceeds 2.6 lbs. (1.18 kg), loosen companion flange-to-stub axle shaft nut. Retighten nut to 118-162 ft. lbs. (160-220 N.m).
- If tightening nut to specification does not reduce rotating starting torque value to 2.6 lbs. (1.18 kg) or less, replace wheel bearings. See STUB AXLE SHAFT
under REMOVAL, DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION.
