Rear Wheel Bearing Rotating Torque

Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Disconnect axle shaft from companion flange. Remove brake pads or caliper assembly. Attach spring scale to wheel lug stud. See Fig 1 .
Pull on spring scale at a right angle to stub axle shaft. Rotating starting torque should not exceed 2.6 lbs. (1.18 kg). If rotating starting torque value exceeds 2.6 lbs. (1.18 kg), loosen companion flange-to-stub axle shaft nut. Retighten nut to 118-162 ft. lbs. (160-220 N.m).
If tightening nut to specification does not reduce rotating starting torque value to 2.6 lbs. (1.18 kg) or less, replace wheel bearings. See STUB AXLE SHAFT under REMOVAL, DISASSEMBLY, REASSEMBLY & INSTALLATION.
