Wheel Bearing (Hub) End Play Adjustment

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Disconnect parking brake cable. Disconnect brake hose and brake tube brackets from axle assembly. Remove brake caliper-to-spindle bolts. Tie brake calipers aside. Remove brake disc. See Figure. Remove end cap from hub. Attach dial indicator to vehicle with sensing tip against hub surface. See Fig 1. Move hub in and out (in line with spindle). Observe indicator needle movement.
  2. If end play is not .004" (.01 mm) or less, tighten hub nut to 144-188 ft. lbs. (195-255 N.m). If tightening hub nut to specification does not reduce end play to specification, replace hub assembly. See WHEEL BEARING (HUB) ASSEMBLY  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
