Timing Belt: Installation
- Install flange onto crankshaft, with chamfered edge facing away from cylinder block. Install camshaft sprocket. Tighten sprocket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install belt tensioner, tension spring, and spacer. Ensure spring is properly engaged against front case. Rotate tensioner toward water pump. Temporarily tighten retaining bolts. Rotate camshaft and crankshaft, ensuring all timing marks are aligned. See Figure.
- Install timing belt onto crankshaft, in original direction of rotation. Apply pressure to tension side of belt while installing belt onto camshaft sprocket.
- Rotate camshaft sprocket in counterclockwise direction to apply tension to belt. Ensure timing marks are aligned. Temporarily install crankshaft pulley to retain timing belt. Adjust timing belt tension. See TIMING BELT ADJUSTMENT under ADJUSTMENTS.CAUTION: If pivot bolt is tightened before side bolt, belt tensioner may rotate, causing belt to be overtightened.
- To check belt tension, hold belt tensioner and timing belt together. Apply slight thumb pressure at center point of belt tensioner. Belt cog should reach 1/2 of slot side bolt head width. See Fig 1. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure.
- Install timing belt tensioner, leaving bolt loose. Using a screwdriver, push tensioner toward engine mount. Tighten timing belt tensioner bolt.
- Align camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket timing marks with timing marks on engine. Install timing belt. Loosen timing belt tensioner to apply spring pressure to timing belt. Ensure timing marks are still aligned.
- Tighten timing belt tensioner bolt. Rotate camshaft in reverse direction and ensure that there is no slack in timing belt. Rotate crankshaft 2 complete revolutions clockwise (as viewed from timing belt end of engine) and ensure timing marks are still aligned.
- Ensure timing belt teeth are properly seated in sprockets. Install flange. See Fig 1. To complete installation, reverse removal procedure. Ensure proper length bolts are installed in designated areas in timing belt covers. See Fig 2.
