Oil Pump & Front Cover: Inspection

  1. Inspect components for damage. Install oil pump gears in front cover. Using feeler gauge, measure gear-to-front cover clearance between tip of teeth on each gear and front cover.
  2. Place straightedge across front cover above gears. Using feeler gauge, check clearance between gear (rotor) tips.
  3. Check for ridge on oil pump cover in gear operating area. Ensure relief plunger slides freely in bore. Ensure spring free length is 1.85" (47.0 mm). Replace components if not within specification. See OIL PUMP SPECIFICATIONS (1.8L)  table.
