Description & Operation: Gauges

Instrument cluster uses 3 magnetic type gauges: coolant temperature, fuel level and oil pressure. Sending unit used for each gauge is a variable resistor type. Variable resistor sending unit varies magnetic field for each gauge. This magnetic field controls gauge needle position. Power is supplied to gauges from fuse No. 10 when ignition switch is in RUN position.

Electronic speedometer is operated by transaxle mounted vehicle speed sensor. Vehicle speed sensor generates an AC voltage signal. This signal is buffered by the speed module and is sent to speedometer circuit board in instrument cluster. Solid state circuitry drives the pointer of speedometer. Electronic tachometer receives engine speed signal from negative side of ignition coil.

Cluster warning indicators receive battery voltage from fuse No. 10 when ignition switch is in RUN position, and from fuse No. 15 when ignition switch is in RUN or START position. All warning indicators require a ground signal to turn each indicator light on.
