Cylinder Head: Removal
- Release fuel pressure. See FUEL PRESSURE RELEASE
in this article. Disconnect negative battery cable. Drain cooling system. Disconnect air intake hose at throttle body.
- Disconnect control cables, coolant hoses, vacuum hoses and electrical connections at throttle body. Disconnect oxygen sensor connector. Disconnect necessary wiring from cylinder head components.
- Remove upper radiator hose and overflow tube. On turbo models, disconnect air intake hoses, coolant hoses, vacuum hoses and oil lines at turbo. On all models, disconnect PCV hose. Disconnect necessary hoses at intake manifold.
- Wrap fuel lines with shop towel and disconnect fuel lines at fuel rail. Disconnect wiring connector at fuel injector wiring. Disconnect hoses at pressure regulator.
- Remove support brace-to-intake manifold. See Figure
. Remove timing belt. See TIMING BELT
in this article. Remove center cover from valve cover. Disconnect spark plug wires. Disconnect hoses from valve cover. Remove valve cover and semi-circular packing at rear of cylinder head.
- Disconnect exhaust pipe at turbo or exhaust manifold. On turbo models, remove heat shields from turbo. Remove turbo, ring and gasket from exhaust manifold.
- On all models, use Cylinder Head Bolt Wrench (MD9978051) to remove cylinder head bolts in proper sequence. See Fig 1
. Remove cylinder head and gasket.
