Camshaft & Rocker Arms: Removal

  1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Remove center cover from valve cover. Disconnect spark plug cables. Disconnect hoses at valve cover. Remove valve cover and semi-circular packing at rear of cylinder head.
  2. Remove timing belt from camshaft sprockets. See TIMING BELT  in this article. Disconnect and remove crank angle sensor from rear of intake camshaft. See Figure .
  3. If camshaft sprockets are being removed, place wrench on hex area of camshaft between No. 2 and 3 journals to hold camshaft while removing camshaft sprocket bolt. Remove camshaft sprocket bolts and sprockets.
    CAUTION: Direction and location of bearing cap must be noted before removing bearing caps. Bearing caps are numbered for location and stamped with a letter to indicate which camshaft the bearing cap should be installed on. The letter "L" indicates intake camshaft and "R" indicates exhaust camshaft. The No. 1 bearing cap only contains the letter for camshaft application.
  4. Remove front and rear bearing caps and camshaft oil seals. See Figure . Remove remaining bearing caps in the following sequence: No. 5, 2, 4 and 3. Remove camshaft. Remove rocker arm and lash adjuster. Mark component location for reassembly reference.
