Removal (Colt Wagon)

  1. Remove cotter pin and loosen axle shaft nut with brakes applied. Raise and support vehicle. Remove front wheels. Support engine and remove center crossmember. Center crossmember is connected to firewall and headlight support.
  2. Remove axle shaft nut and washer. Support control arm. Remove nut and separate ball joint connection at control arm.
  3. Disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle. Disconnect stabilizer bar from control arm. Using puller attached to hub, press axle shaft from hub and swing hub and steering knuckle assembly out of the way.
  4. On 2WD models and 4WD right axle shafts, install 2 screwdrivers between transaxle and axle shaft. Pry axle shaft from transaxle. DO NOT  damage transaxle oil seal. Remove axle shaft assembly.
  5. On 4WD left axle shafts, remove center bearing retaining bolts. See Figure . Install 2 screwdrivers between transaxle and inner shaft. Pry axle shaft from transaxle. DO NOT  damage transaxle oil seal. Remove axle shaft assembly.
    CAUTION: DO NOT  pull on axle shafts during removal or damage to shaft assembly will result. DO NOT  damage transaxle oil seal while removing axle shaft.
