Ignition Switch In RUN Position

  1. Disconnect fuel sending unit connector. If needle moves to the EMPTY mark, gauge is okay. Go to step 2). If needle does not move to the EMPTY mark, check circuit between sending unit and instrument cluster for a short to ground. If circuit is okay, replace fuel gauge.
  2. Momentarily touch terminal "C" of sending unit connector to ground. If needle moves to the FULL mark, replace sending unit. If needle does not move to the FULL mark, check for an open circuit between sending unit and instrument cluster.
  3. Inspect instrument cluster printed circuit for cracks or poor contacts. If no problem is found, replace fuel gauge. If cracks or poor contact points are found, replace printed circuit.
