On Car Adjustments

When the steering gear is thought to be out of adjustment, a quick check can be made by moving the steering wheel back and forth with short slow motions at the "on-center" position with engine shut off. Excessive looseness felt or heard indicates that either the pitman shaft or the thrust bearing requires adjustment. On car steering gear adjustments are not recommended for steering systems. Steering gear adjustments are made with the steering gear removed from the vehicle as outlined under "Bench Adjustments."
