Diagnostic Test
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Record the Environmental Data.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Start the engine.
- Turn the Heated Steering Wheel on.
- With the scan tool, read HSM DTCs.
Is the same DTC active?
Yes
- Go To Next Step.
No
- Perform the TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION procedure. Refer to TESTING FOR AN INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE (C91) HEATED STEERING WHEEL FEED CIRCUIT WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Remove the Driver Airbag in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to DRIVER AIR BAG (DAB) .
- Disconnect the related Clockspring harness connector.WARNING:
Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, erase HSM DTCs.
- Start the engine.
- Turn the HSW on.
- With the scan tool, read HSM DTCs.
Is the same DTC active?
Yes
- Go To Next Step.
No
- Go To 5.
- CHECK THE (C91) HEATED STEERING WHEEL FEED CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the related Heated Seat Module (HSM) harness connector.
- Check for continuity between ground and the (C91) Heated Steering Wheel Feed circuit at the HSM harness connector.
Is there continuity between ground and the (C91) Heated Steering Wheel Feed circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (C91) Heated Steering Wheel Feed circuit for a short to ground.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To Next Step.
- CHECK THE (C91) HEATED STEERING WHEEL FEED CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO THE (C986) HEATED STEERING WHEEL RETURN CIRCUIT
- Check for continuity between the (C91) Heated Steering Wheel Feed circuit and the (C986) Heated Steering Wheel Return circuit at the related Clockspring harness connector.
Is there continuity between the (C91) Heated Steering Wheel Feed circuit and the (C986) Heated Steering Wheel Return circuit?
Yes
- Repair the (C91) Heated Steering Wheel Feed circuit for a short to the (C986) Heated Steering Wheel Return circuit.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6.
- Check for continuity between the (C91) Heated Steering Wheel Feed circuit and the (C986) Heated Steering Wheel Return circuit at the related Clockspring harness connector.
- CHECK THE HEATED STEERING WHEEL WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Remove the Driver Airbag in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to DRIVER AIR BAG (DAB) .
- Disconnect the related Clockspring harness connector.
- Thoroughly inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the Heated Steering Wheel (HSW) and the Clockspring. Look for chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires and broken, bent, pushed out, spread, corroded, or contaminated terminals and repair as necessary.
- Reconnect the Clockspring harness connector.WARNING:
Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- With the scan tool, erase HSM DTCs.
- Turn the ignition off.
- Start the engine.
- Turn the HSW on.
- With the scan tool, read HSM DTCs.
Is the same DTC active?
Yes
- Replace the Clockspring in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to CLOCKSPRING, REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace the Heated Steering Wheel (HSW) in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to STEERING WHEEL .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect all HSM harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Reconnect all HSM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read HSM DTCs.
Is the same DTC active?
Yes
- Replace the Heated Seat Module (HSM) in accordance with the Service Information. .
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Repairing the wiring harness or connections corrected the problem.
- Perform the BODY VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to BODY VERIFICATION TEST .
