Fwd Differential Disassembly
NOTE:
The differential unit can be placed on tool mentioned below as a stable holding fixture.
(Special tool #6888, Installer, Seal)
- Remove the transmission from the vehicle. Refer to REMOVAL .
- Place the transmission on a suitable clean work surface.
- Position a suitable drain pan under the transmission drain plug.
- Remove the drain plug and allow the fluid to drain into the drain pan.
- Remove the bellhousing from the transmission. Refer to BELLHOUSING, REMOVAL .
1 - Differential Housing - Remove the differential housing from the transmission.
1 - Ring Gear 2 - Ring Gear Bolts - Remove the bolts holding the ring gear to the differential housing.
1 - Ring Gear 2 - Differential Housing - Separate the ring gear from the differential housing.
1 - Upper Differential Housing 2 - Differential Housing - Separate the two halves of the differential housing to gain access to the pinion shaft.
1 - Differential Side Gear 2 - Thrust Washer 3 - Differential Housing - Remove the differential side gear and thrust washer from the differential housing.
1 - Lock Pin 2 - Differential Housing - Using a suitable pencil magnet, remove the lock pin holding the pinion shaft in the differential housing.
1 - Thrust Washer 2 - Pinion Gear 3 - Differential Housing 4 - Pinion Shaft - Slide the pinion shaft outward and remove the conical thrust washer from behind the pinion gear.
1 - Pinion Gear 2 - Pinion Shaft - Slide the pinion shaft outward and remove the pinion gear.
1 - Pinion Gear 2 - Pinion Shaft - Slide the pinion shaft outward and remove the pinion gear.
1 - Conical Thrust Washer 2 - Pinion Shaft - Slide the pinion shaft outward and remove the conical thrust washer from behind the pinion gear.
- Remove the pinion shaft from the differential housing.
1 - Differential Side Gear 2 - Thrust Washer 3 - Differential Housing - Remove the differential side gear and thrust washer from the differential housing.
