948TE - Disassembly
The 948TE automatic transmission can be overhauled if the vehicle is beyond its warranty coverage. Verify that the vehicle is no longer covered by warranty, and that applicable parts for overhaul are available before beginning this procedure. A clean work area is necessary to assure a properly functioning transmission after the overhaul procedures are completed. Special tools have been developed and are required to disassemble this transmission. Acquire all of the special tools before starting this procedure.
Always wear safety glasses when cleaning, disassembling and assembling the transmission/transaxle. Contents of the transmission/transaxle can become projectiles (e.g., springs, snap-rings, as well as metal and other debris). Failure to wear safety glasses may result in severe personal injury.
Tag all snap rings, thrust washers, washers, shims, spacers and thrust bearings, etc. during disassembly for quick identification and assembly. Failure to follow these instructions will cause damage and transmission failure.
- Remove the torque converter.
- Measure the input shaft end-play. Refer to INPUT SHAFT END PLAY MEASUREMENT .
1 - Transmission Solenoid Connector 2 - Clip - Remove the clip holding the transmission solenoid connector in the valve body cover pan.
1 - Valve Body Cover Pan Bolts - Remove the valve body cover pan bolts and the valve body cover pan.
1 - Valve Body Bolts - Remove the valve body bolts.
- Using a suitable prying tool, pry the valve body away from the adapter tubes.
1 - Fluid Pressure Transducer 2 - Fluid Pressure Transducer Wire Connector - Turn the valve body over to gain access to wire harness connectors.
- Release the lock on the fluid pressure transducer wire connector and separate the wire harness connector (2) from the fluid pressure transducer.
1 - Transmission Solenoid Connector Bolts 2 - Transmission Solenoid Connector - Remove the bolts holding the transmission solenoid connector to the valve body and solenoids.
- Using a suitable prying tool, separate the transmission solenoid connector from the solenoids.
- Separate the valve body from the transmission.NOTE:
If the valve body is to be reused without disassembling it, store the valve body in a clean area until it is installed.
1 - Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) Screw - Remove the Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) screw.
1 - Transmission Range Sensor (TRS) - Separate the TRS from the transmission with the wire harness connected.
1 - Speed Sensor Screw - Remove the speed sensor screw.
1 - Speed Sensor - Separate the speed sensor from the transmission with the wire harness connected.
1 - Fluid Transfer Tubes - Using suitable pliers, remove the fluid transfer tubes from the transmission.
1 - Bellhousing Bolts - From around the perimeter of the transmission, remove the bellhousing bolts holding the bellhousing to the transmission housing.
1 - Bellhousing to Output Gear Support Bolts - Remove the bellhousing bolts holding the bellhousing to the output gear support.
1 - Bellhousing 2 - Transmission Housing - Using wooden blocks to stabilize the transmission on the work surface, position the transmission on the bench with the bellhousing facing upward.
- Using a suitable pry-bar in the pry point locations, pry upward to dislodge the bellhousing from the transmission housing.
- Lift the bellhousing upward and separate the assembly from the transmission housing.
1 - Seal - Remove the seal from the port in the transmission housing.
1 - Gasket 2 - Transmission Housing - Separate the gasket from the sealing surface of the transmission housing.
1 - Differential Assembly - Remove the differential assembly from the transmission housing.
1 - Clutch E Drum 2 - Clutch E Hub - Separate the clutch E drum from the clutch E hub.
1 - Thrust Bearing 2 - Clutch E Assembly - Separate the thrust bearing from the clutch E assembly.
1 - Clutch E Hub 2 - Output Gear Support - Separate the clutch E hub from the output gear support.
1 - Output Gear Support 2 - Pinion Gear Carrier 4 - Separate the output gear support from pinion gear carrier 4.
1 - Transfer Gear - Remove the transfer gear from the transmission housing.
1 - Thrust Bearing 2 - Sun Gear 3 and 4 and Dog Clutch-F - Separate the thrust bearing from the sun gear 3 and 4 and Dog Clutch-F.
1 - Sun Gear 3 and 4 and Dog Clutch-F - Separate the sun gear 3 and 4 and Dog Clutch-F from pinion gear carrier 4.
1 - Pinion Gear Carrier 4 - Separate the pinion gear carrier 4 from the annulus gear 4.
1 - Annulus Gear 4 and Pinion Gear Carrier 3 2 - Annulus Gear 3 - Separate the annulus gear 4 and pinion gear carrier 3 from the annulus gear 3.
1 - Reaction Pin 2 - Park Pawl 3 - Park Pawl Return Spring - Compress and release the park pawl return spring.
- Pull the reaction pin from the park pawl.
- Separate the park pawl from the park rod guide.
1 - Park Rod Guide 2 - Park Rod Guide Bolt NOTE:The park rod guide can be removed without removing the park rod.
- Remove the park rod guide bolt and the park rod guide.
1 - Puller, Press C-293-PA 2 - Socket 3 - Blocks, Adapter 9738 - Using the tools mentioned below and a suitable socket as a plug, remove the transfer gear bearing cone from the transmission housing.
(Special tool #C-293-PA, Puller, Press) and (Special tool #9738, Blocks, Adapter)
1 - Transfer Gear Bearing Preload Shim - Remove the transfer gear bearing preload shim.
1 - Thrust Bearing 2 - Annulus Gear 1 Hub - Separate the thrust bearing from the annulus gear 1 hub.
1 - Annulus Gear 1 Hub 2 - Pinion Gear 1 and Carrier 2 - Separate the annulus gear 1 hub from the pinion gear 1 and carrier 2.
1 - Thrust Bearing 2 - Annulus Gear 1 Hub - Separate the thrust bearing from under the annulus gear 1 hub.
1 - Snap-Ring - Remove the snap-ring retaining annulus gear 3.
1 - Annulus Gear 3 - Remove annulus gear 3 from the pinion gear 1 and 2 carrier.
1 - O-Ring Seal - Remove the O-ring seal from the pinion gear 1 and 2 carrier.
- Separate the pinion gear 1 and 2 carrier from annulus gear 2 and the clutch D hub and input shaft assembly.
1 - Pressing Tool 8901A With Adapter, Pressing Tool 10428 2 - Clutch D Piston Retainer - Position the transmission housing on a suitable arbor press using wooden blocks for support.
- Using the pressing tool (with pressure scale removed) and the adapter, compress the clutch D piston retainer against its belleville spring, then remove the clutch D piston retainer snap ring.

1 - Pry-Bar 2 - Locking Pliers 3 - Brass Drift 4 - Clutch D Piston Retainer NOTE:The O-ring seal on the clutch D piston retainer will hang up in the snap-ring groove during removal and will need to be pried out of the transmission housing.
- Using a suitable pry-bar, locking pliers and a brass drift coupled together, pry the clutch D piston retainer upward and out of the transmission housing.
1 - Clutch D Piston Retainer 2 - Clutch D Piston - Remove the clutch D piston from the retainer.
1 - Inner Lip Seal 2 - Outer Lip Seal NOTE:Note the orientation of the seal lips for reassembly.
- Remove the inner and outer lip seals from the clutch D piston.
1 - Clutch D Piston Retainer 2 - O-Ring Seal - Remove the O-ring seal from the clutch D piston retainer.
1 - Belleville Spring 2 - Input Shaft Assembly - Separate the belleville spring from the transmission housing.
1 - Input Shaft Assembly - Separate the annulus gear 2, clutch D and clutch C hub and input shaft assembly with clutch B from the transmission housing.
- Remove the annulus gear 2, clutch D and clutch C hub from the input shaft and clutch B.
1 - Seal-Rings 2 - Seal-Ring Lands 3 - Input Shaft - Remove the seal-rings from the lands on the input shaft.
1 - Clutch B Hub 2 - Snap-Ring 3 - Snap-Ring Pliers NOTE:Dog clutch A is permanently attached to the input shaft and cannot be disassembled.
- Using suitable snap-ring pliers, remove the snap-ring holding the input shaft to the clutch B hub.
- Separate the input shaft/dog clutch A from the clutch B (1) hub.
1 - Thrust Washer 2 - Screwdriver 3 - Clutch C Hub - Using a suitable tool, gently pry the thrust washer from the clutch C hub.
1 - Annulus Gear 2, Clutch D and Clutch C Hub 2 - Plug, Differential End 9611 - Place the annulus gear 2, clutch D and clutch C hub on tool to hold the sun gear in position.
(Special tool #9611, Plug, Differential End)
1 - Snap-Ring Pliers 2 - Snap-Ring - Using a suitable snap-ring pliers, remove the snap-ring holding the sun gear 1 to the annulus gear 2, clutch D and clutch C hub.
1 - Sun Gear 1 2 - Annulus Gear 2 3 - Clutch C Hub - Turn the annulus gear 2, clutch D and clutch C hub over and remove sun gear 1.
1 - Annulus Gear 2, Clutch D Hub 2 - Clutch C Hub - Separate the Annulus gear 2, clutch D hub from the clutch C hub.
1 - Thrust Bearing 2 - Clutch C Hub - Separate the thrust bearing from the clutch C hub.
1 - Thrust Bearing - Remove the thrust bearing from the input shaft rear support.
1 - Input Shaft Rear Support Selective Thrust Washer 2 - Thrust Surface - Remove the input shaft rear support selective thrust washer (1).
1 - Clutch D Friction Discs and Steel Plates - Separate the clutch D friction discs and steel plates from the transmission housing.
1 - Clutch C Snap-Ring 2 - Screwdriver 3 - Screwdriver - Using two suitable screwdrivers, lift the clutch C snap-ring and pry it inward with the screwdriver and out of from the groove in the transmission housing.
1 - Clutch C Friction Discs and Steel Plates - Separate the clutch C friction discs and steel plates from the transmission housing.
1 - Compressor, Spring 10504 2 - Clutch C Belleville Spring 3 - Stepped Snap-Ring - Place tool over the clutch C belleville spring at the bottom of the transmission housing.
(Special tool #10504, Compressor, Spring)
1 - Stepped Snap-Ring 2 - Compressor, Spring 10504 3 - Installer, Bearing 8228 - Place the tool over the input shaft support, compress the belleville spring to gain access to the stepped snap-ring.
(special tool #8228, Installer, Bearing) (tool 8901 with 10428 legs can also be used)
1 - Snap-Ring 2 - Transmission Housing - Using a suitable screwdriver, remove the snap-ring holding the clutch C belleville spring in the transmission housing.
1 - Clutch C Belleville Spring 2 - Clutch C Piston - Separate the clutch C belleville spring from the clutch C piston.
1 - Clutch C Piston 2 - Pliers - Using suitable pliers, remove the clutch C piston from the transmission housing.
1 - Inner Seal 2 - Outer Seal 3 - Clutch C Piston - If overhaul is being performed, remove inner and outer seals from the clutch C piston.
1 - Inner Seal-Ring - Using a suitable hook tool, remove the inner seal-ring from the input shaft support.
1 - Outer Seal-Rings - Using a suitable hook tool, remove the outer seal-rings from the input shaft support.
1 - Split Roller Bearing - Using a suitable hook tool, remove the split roller bearing from the input shaft support.
