Knuckle, Steering: Removal

Raise and support vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
Remove tire and wheel assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .

Using a suitable punch, lift the two staked areas on the hub nut (1) to avoid damaging the threads on the halfshaft.
With aid of a helper applying the brakes to keep front hub from turning, remove hub nut (1) from axle halfshaft (2).
Push in on end of halfshaft (2), disengaging its splines from hub splines.
Access and remove front brake rotor. Refer to ROTOR, BRAKE, REMOVAL .
Remove bolts fastening brake shield to knuckle, then remove brake shield.

Disconnect wheel speed sensor wiring harness (2) from strut bracket (1).
Remove wheel speed sensor to knuckle bolt (3), gently pull wheel speed sensor from knuckle and position aside.

Remove nut (2) securing link to the lower control arm.

Remove nut (3) attaching outer tie rod to knuckle by holding rod end stud stationary while loosening and removing nut with a wrench.

Release outer tie rod end (1) from knuckle using a tie rod puller.

Remove nut (3) attaching lower control arm to ball joint by holding rod end stud stationary while loosening and removing nut with a wrench.
Release lower control arm from the ball joint using a tie rod puller.
(special tool #C-3894-A, Puller, Tie Rod)

NOTE:
The halfshaft C/V joint must be supported to prevent it from separation and not allowed to hang after the knuckle is removed.

Remove the knuckle to strut pinch bolt (4) and nut (2).
Separate strut (1) from knuckle and remove from vehicle.
