Knuckle, Steering: Installation

CAUTION:

Before installing knuckle on ball joint stud, wipe ball joint stud and knuckle contact area free of any grease or debris, otherwise damage to knuckle can occur. Use a clean shop cloth with Mopar® Brake Parts Cleaner applied to it for proper cleaning. Do not spray stud directly.

  1. Place knuckle with ball joint stud (1) into lower control arm.
  2. Install the lower control arm to the ball joint (1).
  3. Install a NEW  nut (3) attaching lower control arm to ball joint by holding rod end stud stationary while tightening nut with a wrench. Using a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench, tighten the nut to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Slide halfshaft splines into hub and bearing assembly.

  5. Align strut index with knuckle and install the strut (1) into the knuckle.
  6. Install the strut to knuckle pinch bolt/nut (4, 2) and tighten to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

    NOTE:

    Before installing the wheel speed sensor back into the knuckle make sure it is clean and free of debris and metal shavings.

  7. Attach wheel speed sensor harness (2) into the routing bracket (1) to knuckle.
  8. Install wheel speed sensor into the knuckle and tighten bolt (3) to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  9. Install brake shield on knuckle and tighten mounting bolts to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  10. Install brake rotor, caliper adapter, and caliper assembly. Refer to ROTOR, BRAKE, INSTALLATION .

  11. Attach outer tie rod (1) to knuckle. Start NEW  nut (2) onto outer tie rod stud. While holding stud stationary, tighten nut using a wrench. Using a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench, tighten nut to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
    NOTE:

    Always install a new hub nut. The original hub nut is one time use only and should be discarded when removed.

  12. Install a NEW  hub nut (1) and while a helper applies the brakes, tighten the nut to the proper torque specification. Refer to TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .

  13. Using the chisel leading cutting edge, stake the hub nut.

  14. The hub nut must be staked so that it looks similar to Figure 1. Both edges must be split and bent into the shape shown in illustration (3). The staking must be in the opposite direction from the forward rotation of the wheel.
  15. Install tire and wheel assembly. Refer to REMOVAL .
  16. Lower vehicle.
  17. Pump brake pedal several times to ensure vehicle has a firm brake pedal before moving vehicle.
  18. Check and adjust brake fluid level as necessary.
  19. Perform wheel alignment. Refer to WHEEL ALIGNMENT  .
