Diagnostic Test

  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC 
    1. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs and record on the repair order.
    2. Record the Environmental Data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    5. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

  2. CHECK THE AFFECTED SQUIB USING SUBSTITUTE RESISTOR FROM TEST RESISTOR KIT 
    WARNING:

    Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    WARNING:

    Do not place an intact non-deployed airbag face down on a hard surface, the airbag propels into the air if accidentally deployed. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    1. Disconnect the affected Squib harness connector and insure connector and terminals are not damaged.
    2. Connect test resistor contained in resistor kit 2022400100. Reconnect the battery and wait two minutes.
    3. Turn the ignition on.
    4. Clear DTC and note if it returns.

      Did the DTC return?

      No 

      Yes 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE SQUIB CIRCUITS FOR SHORT TO GROUND 
    1. Disconnect the Squib connector and the related Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) connector.
      NOTE:

      Probing of the circuit cavities at the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) body harness connectors or in- line connectors with an approved test leads from the test lead kit 10159-6 to prevent vehicle wiring harness connector damage during diagnostic procedures.

    2. Check for continuity between ground and both of the Squib circuits at the Squib harness connector.

      Is there continuity between ground and either circuit?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE SQUIB CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER 
    1. Check for continuity between the Squib circuits at the Squib harness connector.

      Is there continuity between the Squib circuits?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE SQUIB CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Measure the resistance of the Squib circuits from the Squib harness connector to the ORC harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms on either circuit?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

  6. CHECK THE SQUIB CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE 
    1. Measure the voltage between ground and the Squib circuits at the Squib connector.

      Is there any voltage present on either circuit?

      Yes 

      No
