Evaporator, A/C: Description
The A/C evaporator for the front Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) system is located in the front HVAC housing, behind the instrument panel. The A/C evaporator is made of rows of flat tubes with fins (1). The A/C expansion valve is attached to the evaporator tubes (3) by use of a metal tapping plate (4) and rubber and metal composite dual-plane seals. The A/C evaporator and insulator (2) are positioned in the HVAC housing so that all air flowing through the housing must pass through the evaporator before it is distributed through the HVAC system ducts and outlets. However, air passing through the A/C evaporator will only be conditioned when the A/C compressor is engaged and circulating refrigerant through the evaporator.
The HVAC housing must be removed from the vehicle and disassembled to service the A/C evaporator.
