Diagnostic Test

  1. NO START PRE-TEST 
    NOTE:

    Verify no faults are set in the Occupant Restraint Controller. If codes are present, they may be the cause of a No Start condition.

    NOTE:

    The following list of items must be checked before continuing with any no start tests.

    1. The Battery must be fully charged and in good condition. A low charged Battery may produce invalid test results. If the Battery is low, charge the Battery and then attempt to start the vehicle by cranking the engine for 15.0 seconds, three consecutive times. This will allow any DTCs to set that may have been erased due to a dead Battery.
    2. Try to communicate with the PCM using a scan tool. If communication between the scan tool and PCM is not allowed, inspect fuses. If the fuses appear OK, for the No Response from PCM diagnostic procedure. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .
    3. Read the PCM DTCs with the scan tool. If any DTCs are present, they must be repaired before continuing with any other No Start diagnostic tests. for the related P-code that is reported by the PCM. Refer to DTC INDEX (1 OF 2) or DTC INDEX (2 OF 2) .
    4. Make sure that the Communication Bus is functional. Attempt to communicate with other modules on the CAN C bus. If you are unable to establish communication with any modules, for the Diagnostic CAN C diagnostic procedures. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .
    5. The vehicles security module must be operating properly. Check for DTCs that may be stored in the vehicles security module. Repair the DTCs before continuing.
    6. If no DTCs are found, using the scan tool, select Clear PCM (BATT Disconnect).
    7. Crank the engine several times. Using the scan tool, read DTCs. If a DTC is present go to and perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure before continuing.

      Were any problems found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  2
  2. CHECK FOR AN OPEN FUSE 
    1. Check for any open fuses that may be related to the No Start condition.

      Are any fuses open?

      Yes 

      • Check the related circuit(s) for a short to ground and replace the open fuse.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE IGNITION SYSTEM 
    1. Remove an Ignition Coil from a Spark Plug.
    2. Crank the engine while checking for spark at the coil using a spark tester.
      NOTE:

      If no spark is present it is a good practice to check multiple coils to see if the issue is present at one or more of the Ignition Coils.

      Is spark present at the Ignition Coil?

      Yes 

      • Go To  4

      No 

      • Repair the issue causing no spark to the spark plugs.
  4. CHECK THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM 
    1. Verify that the Fuel tank is not empty before continuing.
    2. Perform the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM test procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM (HARD START) .

      Was the No Start condition solved after following the CHECKING THE FUEL DELIVERY SYSTEM diagnostic procedure?

      Yes 

      • Test Complete.

      No 

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE FUEL FOR PROPER ETHANOL LEVEL 
    1. Perform the CHECKING FOR PROPER ETHANOL LEVEL IN GASOLINE test procedure. Refer to DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING .

      Does the fuel have the proper ethanol level?

      Yes 

      • Go To  6

      No 

      • Drain and replace the fuel.
  6. CHECK THE PCM POWERS AND GROUNDS 
    1. Perform the CHECKING THE POWERS AND GROUNDS test procedure. Refer to CHECKING THE PCM POWER AND GROUND CIRCUITS .

      Were any issues found?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  7
  7. CHECK FOR ENGINE MECHANICAL ISSUE 
    1. Check for any of the following conditions/mechanical problems:
      • ENGINE COMPRESSION - must be within specifications.
      • ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM - must be free of any restrictions or leaks.
      • ENGINE VALVE TIMING - must be within specifications, check for broken timing components

      Are there any engine mechanical problems?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  8
  8. CHECK RELATED PCM AND COMPONENT CONNECTIONS 
    1. Perform any Service Bulletins that apply.
    2. Disconnect all PCM harness connectors.
    3. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    4. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    5. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    6. Reconnect all PCM harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.

      Did the vehicle start?

      Yes 

      • Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
