Fan 1 (Left Fan) Is Completely Inoperative (Low And High Speed) - (P0480, P0481)

  1. Check the fuse for radiator fan 1 in the PDC.
    1. If the fuse is open, continue to step 2.
    2. If the fuse is good, continue to step 3.
  2. Replace the fuse and retest. Operate radiator fan 1 on low and high speed to test all of the output circuits and fan.
    1. If the fuse opens immediately when the fan is actuated on high speed, use the wiring information to check both output circuits (A212 and N23) for a short to ground. If the output circuits (A212 and N23) are not shorted to ground, replace the radiator fan motor.
    2. If the fuse does not open immediately, check the amperage draw of the fan. Monitor the in-rush current and steady state current of the fan when high speed operation is initiated. A faulty fan can draw excessive current and damage a fuse. The current may not stay above the fuse threshold but may stay very close to the fuse threshold and slowly damage the fuse and eventually cause an open.
  3. Disconnect the cooling fan harness connector and load test the ground circuit at the harness connector. Read the CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURE for information on building a simple load test tool and for additional load testing information and alternative methods of load testing or voltage drop testing a circuit. Refer to CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURES .

    NOTE:

    A way to verify that there is no resistance in the circuit being tested is to perform a simple voltage drop test across the 3156 bulb of the load test tool. The voltage drop across the bulb should be equal to the voltage reading across the Battery terminals if there is no resistance in the circuit being tested.

    1. If the ground circuit fails load testing, repair the chassis ground for the radiator fan.
    2. If the ground circuit tests good, continue testing in step 4.
  4. Load test the battery supply to the fan at the fan harness connector. Operate the fan at high speed to load test the circuit. Do not use low speed fan operation because of the resistor in the low speed circuitry.

    NOTE:

    A way to verify that there is no resistance in the circuit being tested is to perform a simple voltage drop test across the 3156 bulb of the load test tool. The voltage drop across the bulb should be equal to the voltage reading across the Battery terminals if there is no resistance in the circuit being tested.

    1. If the battery supply circuit tests good, replace the radiator fan 1.
    2. If the battery supply circuit fails load testing, check the (N23) circuit for an open or high resistance between the radiator fan harness connector and the harness splice.
