Both Cooling Fans Are Completely Inoperative (Low And High Speed) - Any Or All Of The Following DTCS May Be Present (P0480, P0481, P0482, P0695 Or P0696)
This diagnostic is designed to diagnose the fan system when neither fan operates on any speed. While it is always possible, it is unlikely that all three control circuits are faulted. It is more likely a common power supply or grounding issue.
- Check the fuses for both fans in the PDC.
- If both fuses check good, continue to step 2.
- If both fuses are open, replace the fuses and retest. If a fuse opens immediately when the fans are actuated, use the wiring information to check the output circuits between the relays and fan for a short to ground. If the fuses do not open immediately, check the amperage draw of the fans. Monitor the in-rush current and steady state current of the fans when high speed operation is initiated. A faulty fan can draw excessive current and damage a fuse. The current may not stay above the fuse threshold but may stay very close to the fuse threshold and slowly damage the fuse and eventually cause an open.
- Disconnect the fan connectors and load test the ground circuits at the fan harness connectors. Read the CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURE for information on building a simple load test tool and for additional load testing information and alternative methods of load testing or voltage drop testing a circuit. Refer to CIRCUIT LOAD TESTING PROCEDURES
.NOTE:
A way to verify that there is no resistance in the circuit being tested is to perform a simple voltage drop test across the 3156 bulb of the load test tool. The voltage drop across the bulb should be equal to the voltage reading across the Battery terminals if there is no resistance in the circuit being tested.
- If the ground circuits fail load testing, repair the chassis ground for the fans.
- If the ground circuit tests good, continue testing in step 3.
- Load test the battery supply to the fans at the fan harness connectors. Operate each fan at high speed to load test the circuit. Do not use low speed fan operation because of the resistor in the low speed circuitry.NOTE:
A way to verify that there is no resistance in the circuit being tested is to perform a simple voltage drop test across the 3156 bulb of the load test tool. The voltage drop across the bulb should be equal to the voltage reading across the Battery terminals if there is no resistance in the circuit being tested.
- If the battery supply circuits fail load testing, repair the circuits for an open or high resistance.
- If the battery supply circuits test good, replace the radiator fans.
