Diagnostic Test

  1. MECHANICAL CONDITION 
    NOTE:

    Verify the battery is fully charged and capable of passing a load test before continuing.

    NOTE:

    Diagnose and repair any Body Control Module (BCM) DTCs before continuing. An inoperative Key Fobik or SKIS can cause a No Crank Condition.

    NOTE:

    Diagnose and repair any Powertrain Control Module (PCM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) DTCs before continuing.

    WARNING:

    Make sure the battery is disconnected, then wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to do so may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    1. Turn the engine over by hand to make sure the engine is not seized.

      Is the engine able to turn over?

      Yes 

      • Go To  2

      No 

      • Repair the mechanical condition preventing the Starter Motor from cranking the engine.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  2. PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION 
    1. Place the transmission in PARK for automatic transmissions.
    2. Press the clutch pedal in for manual transmissions.
    3. With the scan tool, read the Park/Neutral Switch State or Clutch Switch status.

      Does the scan tool Park-Neutral Switch State or Clutch Switch status match the actual position?

      Yes 

      • Go To  3

      No 

      • Diagnose and repair the cause of the Park/Neutral Switch State or Clutch Switch reading incorrect.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  3. EXCESSIVE RESISTANCE IN THE BATTERY CIRCUIT 
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Perform a voltage drop test on the Battery Cables in accordance with the Service Information.

      Did either Battery Cable have a voltage drop greater than 0.2 volts?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH FUSED B+ CIRCUIT 
    1. Disconnect the Ignition Switch.
    2. Check the Fused B+ circuit to the Ignition Switch for battery voltage.
      NOTE:

      The voltage measured should be near battery voltage.

      Is the voltage measured near battery voltage?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

      • Repair the Fused B+ circuit for an open circuit or short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  5. CHECK THE STARTER RELAY B+ CIRCUITS 
    1. Remove the Starter Relay from the Power Distribution Center (PDC).
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe terminal 30 and terminal 85 at the Starter Relay connector.
      NOTE:

      The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connector to the Battery.

      Does the test lamp illuminate brightly?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

      • Replace the Power Distribution Center (PDC) in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  6. CHECK THE STARTER RELAY CRANK CIRCUIT 
    1. Remove the Starter Relay from the Power Distribution Center (PDC).
    2. Turn the ignition on.
    3. Using a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe terminal 85 at the Starter Relay connector while turning the ignition to the CRANK position.
      NOTE:

      The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connector to the Battery.

      Does the test lamp illuminate brightly?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

      • Using the wiring information as a guide, diagnose and repair the Starter Relay Crank circuit.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK THE STARTER RELAY CONTROL CIRCUIT 
    1. With a 12-volt test light connected to B+, probe terminal 86 at the Starter Relay connector.
    2. Have an assistant turn the ignition key to the CRANK position.
      NOTE:

      The test light must illuminate brightly. Compare the brightness to that of a direct connector to the Battery.

      Does the test lamp illuminate brightly?

      Yes 

      • Go To  8

      No 

      • Using the wiring information as a guide, diagnose and repair the Starter Relay Control circuit.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. STARTER 
    CAUTION:

    The Parking Brake must be on and the Transmission must be in park for a vehicle equipped with an automatic transmission.

    1. Turn ignition off.
    2. Disconnect the Starter Solenoid harness connector.
      NOTE:

      The Stater Solenoid harness connector must remain disconnected at this time.

    3. With a 12-volt test light connected to ground, probe the Starter Relay Output circuit at the Starter Solenoid harness connector.
    4. Have an assistant turn the ignition key to the CRANK position.
      NOTE:

      The test light should be illuminated and bright with the ignition in the CRANK position.

      Does the test light illuminate brightly?

      Yes 

      • Replace the Starter in accordance with the Service Information.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Using the wiring information as a guide, diagnose and repair the Starter Relay Output circuit for an open between the Starter Relay connector and the Starter Solenoid.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
