Left Cylinder Head Cover

CAUTION:

The magnetic timing wheels must not come in contact with magnets (pickup tools, trays, etc.) or any other strong magnetic field. This will destroy the timing wheels ability to correctly relay camshaft position to the camshaft position sensor.

  1. Remove the right hand underbody shield. Refer to SHIELD, UNDERBODY, REMOVAL .
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to DRAINING .
  3. Remove the left hand camshaft position sensor. Refer to SENSOR, CAMSHAFT POSITION, REMOVAL .

  4. Cover the open intake ports (1) to prevent debris from entering the engine.
  5. Remove the insulator (2) from the left hand cylinder head cover.
  6. Remove the left side ignition coils. Refer to COIL, IGNITION, REMOVAL .
  7. Remove the left hand variable valve timing solenoids. Refer to SOLENOID, VARIABLE VALVE TIMING, REMOVAL .

  8. Disconnect the breather tube (2) from the rear of the left hand cylinder head cover (1).
  9. Disconnect the coolant temperate sensor wiring harness connector on the thermostat housing.

  10. Disengage the wiring harness retainers (1) near the left hand variable valve timing solenoids.
  11. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors from the left fuel injectors.
  12. Disengage the remaining wiring harness retainers from the top of the left hand cylinder head cover and reposition the wiring harness.
  13. Remove the variable valve lift bank 2 solenoid 1. Refer to SOLENOID, VARIABLE VALVE LIFT, REMOVAL .

  14. Remove the oil dipstick tube bracket bolt (1) and reposition the oil dipstick tube aside (2).

  15. Remove the upper coolant hose fasteners (1).

  16. Disconnect the small coolant hose (1) and upper coolant hose (2) from the thermostat housing and position hoses aside.

  17. Loosen the left hand cylinder head cover fasteners (1) and remove the left hand cylinder head cover.

  18. Remove and discard the left hand cylinder head cover gasket (1).
  19. The spark plug tube seals (2) can be reused if not damaged.

    CAUTION:

    Do not use oil based liquids, wire brushes, abrasive wheels or metal scrapers to clean the engine gasket surfaces. Use only isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, along with plastic or wooden scrapers. Improper gasket surface preparation may result in engine fluid leakage.

  20. Remove all residual sealant (1) from the cylinder head, timing chain cover and cylinder head cover mating surfaces. Refer to ENGINE GASKET SURFACE PREPARATION .
