Muffler, Exhaust: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  2. Saturate the band clamp nuts with rust penetrant. Allow five minutes for penetration.

    NOTE:

    When replacement is required on any component of the exhaust system, it is important that original equipment parts (or equivalent) be used.

  3. Remove the exhaust isolators.
  4. Loosen the band clamp nut (3) at the muffler (2) and separate the exhaust extension pipe from the muffler.
  5. Loosen the band clamp nut (1) at the exhaust resonator (2) and remove the muffler.
    CAUTION:

    Do not use any tools to remove the rubber isolators, remove by hand only. Soapy water or silicone based lubricant spray may be used to assist removal/installation of isolators. DO NOT use a petroleum based lubricant on the isolators, as damage to the rubber material can occur.

  6. Clean the ends of the pipes or muffler to assure mating of all parts. Discard broken or worn insulators, rusted clamps, supports and attaching parts.
