SEATBELT Indicator

The seatbelt indicator indicates the status of the driver side front seatbelt. This indicator is controlled by a transistor on the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) circuit board based upon IPC programming and a hard-wired input from the seatbelt switch on the driver side front seatbelt retractor through the seatbelt switch sense circuits.

The seatbelt indicator also includes a programmable enhanced seatbelt reminder or BELTMINDER feature that is enabled when the vehicle is shipped from the factory. This BELTMINDER feature can be disabled and enabled by using a specific programming event sequence or by using a diagnostic scan tool. Refer to ENHANCED SEATBELT REMINDER PROGRAMMING .

The seatbelt indicator Light Emitting Diode (LED) is controlled by the IPC logic circuit and illuminates when the IPC receives a battery current input on the fused ignition switch output (run-start) circuit. Therefore, the LED will always be OFF when the ignition switch is in any position, except ON or START. The LED only illuminates when it is provided a path to ground by the IPC transistor. The IPC will turn ON the seatbelt indicator for the following reasons:

• Seatbelt Reminder Function  - When the IPC detects a battery current input on the fused ignition switch output (run-start) circuit, the seatbelt reminder indicator will be illuminated for approximately six seconds, or until the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position.
• Front Seatbelt Not Buckled - BELTMINDER Active  - When the ignition switch is in the START or ON position, and the IPC receives a CAN Bus message from the BCM, the indicator will be illuminated. After the conclusion of the Seatbelt Reminder Function and the front seatbelt remains unbuckled, the seatbelt indicator will flash ON and OFF for 3 seconds, and then illuminates for 2 seconds. The seatbelt indicator will flash or illuminate for 13 complete cycles until a CAN Bus message from the BCM is provided on the IPC, or until the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position.
• Front Seatbelt Not Buckled - BELTMINDER Inactive  - After the Seatbelt Reminder Function has been completed, whenever a seatbelt is unbuckled the BCM sends a CAN Bus message to the IPC to illuminate the seatbelt indicator. The seatbelt indicator will remain illuminated until the IPC receives a CAN Bus message from the BCM, indicating the seatbelt has been buckled,, or until the ignition switch is turned to the OFF position.

The seatbelt switch is connected in series between ground and the seatbelt switch sense circuit input to the IPC. The seatbelt switch input to the IPC circuitry may be diagnosed using conventional diagnostic tools and procedures. Refer to the appropriate wiring information.
