Parking Brake: Operation

CAUTION:

If the Electric Park Brake (EPB) switch is actuated with the caliper removed from the caliper bracket and still connected electrically, the EPB motor will fully extend causing damage to the caliper piston. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable. If equipped with an Intelligent Battery Sensor (IBS), disconnect the IBS connector first before disconnecting the negative battery cable.

ELECTRIC PARK BRAKE (EPB) ACTUATOR 

The EPB actuator is driven by the ABS module. It is a bi-directional motor that receives 12-volt power and ground through the ABS module to apply or release clamp load to the brake rotor. Once applied, it does not need voltage to maintain clamp load.

NOTE:

If the electric park brake actuator is diagnosed to be not functioning properly or damaged, it can only be replaced as an assembly. There are no serviceable parts inside and is non-repairable.

ELECTRIC PARK BRAKE (EPB) SWITCH 

The Electric Park Brake (EPB) switch sends an on/off request signal to the ABS module to apply or release the EPB.

At any time, the EPB switch can be actuated. Depending on the speed of the vehicle when the EPB switch is actuated, the EPB module will output different commands to request the EPB to apply under the following conditions:

There are two indicators in the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) to give feedback for the EPB system. The traditional red BRAKE warning lamp is illuminated when the EPB is applied. If there is a fault in the EPB system, an amber EPB fault lamp is illuminated.
