CROSSMEMBER, Front Suspension: Removal

  1. Place front wheels of vehicle in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.
  2. Install steering wheel holder locking steering wheel in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position.

  3. Remove the battery access cover.
  4. Release the lever (1) and disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable.

  5. Remove the steering column pinch bolt (1).
  6. Slide the intermediate shaft off of the steering gear shaft.
  7. Raise and support vehicle. Refer to HOISTING, STANDARD PROCEDURE .
  8. Remove both tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to REMOVAL .

  9. Remove the stabilizer bar link to lower control arm nut (2).

  10. Remove the lower washer (2) and bushing (1).

  11. On both sides of vehicle, hold the tie rod end stud (1), then remove and DISCARD  the tie rod nut (2).
  12. Release each outer tie rod end (1) from the knuckle using a tie rod puller.

    (special tool #C-3894-A, Puller, Tie Rod)

  13. On both sides of vehicle, hold the ball joint stud (1), then remove and DISCARD  the ball joint to lower control arm nut (3) and remove the washer (2).
  14. Release each lower control arms from the ball joint using a tie rod puller.

  15. Remove the rear side transmission strut mount bolt (3).

  16. Disengage the wire harness routing clips (1).

  17. Disconnect the steering gear wire harness connectors (1, 2).

  18. On the right side of the vehicle, remove the underbody shield to crossmember bolt (1).
  19. Using a paint pen, mark the location of the crossmember to the body.
  20. Position a support jack under the crossmember.

  21. On each side of the vehicle, remove the front crossmember bolts (2).

  22. Remove the six front crossmember bolts (1) and carefully lower crossmember assembly.
  23. If necessary, remove the stabilizer from the crossmember. Refer to STABILIZER BAR, FRONT, REMOVAL .
  24. If necessary, remove the steering gear from the crossmember. Refer to GEAR, REMOVAL .
