Linkage, Wiper Arm: Description
The wiper linkage module is secured to the dash panel beneath the cowl plenum cover/grille panels. The ends of the wiper pivot shafts protrude through dedicated openings in the cowl plenum cover/grille panels to drive the wiper arms and blades and are the only visible components of the wiper linkage module.
The wiper linkage module consists of the following major components:
- Bracket - The wiper linkage module bracket (2) consists of a tubular member that extends from opposite sides of a stamped metal center section that serves as the wiper motor mount. The tubular member has a die cast pivot bracket formation (3) secured at the outboard end where the wiper pivots are secured. The wiper linkage module bracket is secured to the dash panel by three screws through three rubber insulators.
- Crank Arm - The wiper motor crank arm is a stamped steel unit with a hole on the driven end that is secured to the wiper motor output shaft with a nut, and has a ball stud secured to the drive end.
- Linkage - Stamped steel drive links (1) connect the wiper motor crank arm to the lever arm of each wiper pivot. The right drive link has a plastic sleeve-type bushing on one end and a plastic socket-type bushing on the opposite end. The left drive link has a plastic socket-type bushing on each end. The bushing on the pivot end of each link is snap-fit over a ball stud on the pivot lever arm. The sleeve-type bushing of the right drive link is installed over the ball stud of the motor crank arm, then captured by the socket-type bushing of the left drive link snap-fit over the motor crank arm ball stud.
- Motor - The wiper motor (4) is secured by through the motor transmission housing with three screws near the center of the wiper linkage module bracket. The two-speed permanent magnet wiper motor features an integral transmission, an internal park switch and an internal automatic resetting circuit breaker. An integral connector receptacle connects the motor to the vehicle electrical system.
- Pivots - The two wiper pivots are secured to the ends of the wiper module bracket. The lever arm that extends from the lower end of each pivot shaft has a ball stud that is engaged with the socket-type bushings of the drive links. The upper end of each pivot shaft where the wiper arms will be fastened each is tapered and serrated with a threaded stud formation at the tip.
The wiper linkage module cannot be adjusted or repaired. If any component of the module is ineffective or damaged, the entire wiper linkage module unit must be replaced.
