Park Assist System
The park assist system includes the following major components, which are described in further detail elsewhere in this service information:
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) - In vehicles equipped with the optional park assist system, the IPC emits audible warnings related to the current operating status of the park assist system.
- Park Assist Module
- Vehicles equipped with the park assist system include a Park Assist Module (PAM) which is located behind the instrument panel glove box assembly.
- Park Assist Sensors - Vehicles equipped with the park assist system have ultrasonic park assist sensors that are concealed behind the front (1) and the rear bumper fascia. Each sensor is snapped into an individual molded plastic mounting bracket which is secured to a sensor bezel at horizontal intervals along the reverse side of the rear bumper fascia.
Front and Rear Ultrasonic Park Assist System
The system uses sensors located on each of the front and rear fascias. The sensors sequentially send out ultrasonic waves when the vehicle is driven in forward or reverse at low speeds.
The sending sensor and adjacent sensors pick up the echo of a signal when it bounces off an object. Triangulation is used to determine relative distance, based on elapsed time between the outgoing signal and its return. The cluster display notifies the driver of front/rear object proximity relative to stationary objects.
Using the ultrasonic sensing elements on the front and rear fascia's, the vehicle is able to park in parallel or perpendicular spaces automatically, with little to no driver input needed using the following:
- To enable the self parking feature, the system uses ultrasonic sensors positioned on the faces and side portions of the front and rear fascia's
- The system is activated through prompts that appear in the instrument cluster and responses to them. When a suitable space (either a side parallel street spot or rear back-in perpendicular lot space), the system will advise the driver to stop through audible and visual prompts
- The driver will then be directed by the system to engage the reverse gear and operate the brake function with the system controlling the steering and vehicle motion
- Parking guidance controls the steering angle automatically; the driver controls the gear position, brake, and accelerator
- Parallel parking is possible on either side of the vehicle
- During perpendicular parking, the vehicle is backed into the space
- When the maneuver is complete, the system notifies the driver
The Park Assist System can be activated by the system buttons (1) in the Integrated Center Stack (ICS). System function is displayed in the center of the gauge cluster and operated with buttons on the steering wheel and the shifter. The graphic directs the driver through the steps necessary to utilize the park assist system.
