Diagnostic Test

  1. READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN 
    1. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs and record on the repair order.
    2. Record the Environmental Data.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    4. Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    5. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs.

    Did the DTC return?

    Yes 

    • Go To  2

    No 

    • Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST .
    • Probing of the circuit cavities at the ORC Module body harness connectors or vehicle connectors is only to be done with a approved test lead from the test lead 10159-6 or the use of Breakout Box 8443-55 to prevent vehicle wiring harness connector damage during diagnostic procedures. 
  2. CHECK FOR ACTIVE INTERNAL FAULTS, IGNITION FAULTS, AND BATTERY FAULTS IN THE OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER (ORC) 
    1. With the scan tool, read Occupant restraint Controller (ORC) DTCs.

      Does the scan tool display any active DTCs relating to internal faults, ignition faults, or battery faults?

      Yes 

      No 

      • Go To  3
  3. INSPECT RELATED SEAT HARNESS WIRES AND CONNECTORS 
    WARNING:

    Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    1. Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the driver seat harness wiring and connectors. Look for chafed, pierced, pinched, or partially broken wires and broken, bent, pushed out, spread, corroded, or contaminated terminals.

      Are any of these conditions present?

      Yes 

      NOTE:

      Do not attempt to repair the Seat Harness. Replace the Seat Harness if the condition inspecting or testing for is present in the Seat Harness.

      No 

      • Go To  4
  4. VERIFY THAT RELATED SEAT HARNESS IS ROUTED CORRECTLY 
    1. Verify that the related seat harness is routed correctly.

      Is the related seat harness routed correctly?

      Yes 

      • Go To  5

      No 

  5. CHECK THE RELATED SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR DATA CIRCUIT AND SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR VOLTAGE CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE 
    1. Disconnect the ORC harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect the related Seat Track Position Sensor connector.
    3. Measure the resistance of the related Seat Track Position Sensor Data circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Seat Track Position Sensor connector and the ORC Module body harness connector.
    4. Measure the resistance of the related Seat Track Position Sensor Voltage circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Seat Track Position Sensor connector and the ORC Module body harness connector.

      Is the resistance below 0.5 Ohm on both circuits?

      Yes 

      NOTE:

      Do not attempt to repair the Seat Harness. Replace the Seat Harness if the condition inspecting or testing for is present in the Seat Harness.

      • Repair or replace the related seat harness circuit(s) for an open or high resistance.
      • Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .

      No 

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE RELATED SEAT TRACK POSITION SENSOR 
    1. Replaced the related Seat Track Position Sensor in accordance with Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, SEAT TRACK POSITION, REMOVAL .
    2. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    3. Turn the ignition off for 10 seconds.
    4. Turn the ignition on.
    5. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      • Go To  7

      No 

  7. CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS 
    1. Disconnect all ORC harness connectors.
    2. Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
    3. Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
    4. Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
      • Proper connector installation.
      • Damaged connector locks.
      • Corrosion.
      • Other signs of water intrusion.
      • Weather seal damage (if equipped).
      • Bent terminals.
      • Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
      • Presence of foreign conductive materials on connector pins and terminals.
      • Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
      • Perform a terminal drag test on each connector terminal to verify proper terminal tension.

      Repair any conditions that are found.

    5. Reconnect all ORC harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    6. Reconnect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    7. Reconnect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
    8. If the vehicle is equipped with the standard key ignition, follow this ignition on warning.
      WARNING:

      Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    9. If the vehicle is equipped with the keyless ignition, follow this ignition on warning.
      WARNING:

      Disconnect the 12-volt battery wait two minutes before proceeding, remove the ORC fuses, connect the 12-volt battery, wait two minutes before proceeding. Cycle the ignition to the On position, then reconnect the ORC fuses. Wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.

    10. With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
    11. Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
    12. With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs.

      Did the DTC return?

      Yes 

      WARNING:

      If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions can result in accidental airbag deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
