Diagnostic Test
- READ AND RECORD DTCS AND ENVIRONMENTAL DATA - ERASE DTCS AND CHECK FOR DTC TO RETURN NOTE:
The use of a approved special tool or Digital Multimeter such as a Fluke Meter that will not apply more than 20 milliamperes to a circuit are the only measurement tools to be used.
NOTE:Probing of the circuit cavities at the ORC Module body harness connectors is only to be done with a approved test lead from the Dedicated Test Leads kit 10159, test lead 10159-6. Or a comparable test lead to prevent vehicle wiring harness connector damage during diagnostic procedures. (special tool #10159, Test Leads, Dedicated)
NOTE:Make sure the battery is fully charged.
- With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs and record on the repair order.
- Record the Environmental Data.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Using the recorded Environmental Data, along with the When Monitored and Set Conditions above, operate the vehicle in the conditions that set the DTC.
- With the scan tool, read ORC DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM INTERMITTENT TEST .
- Probing of the circuit cavities at the ORC Module body harness connectors or vehicle connectors is only to be done with a approved test lead from the test lead 10159-6 or the use of Breakout Box 8443-55 to prevent vehicle wiring harness connector damage during diagnostic procedures.
- CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT / ACCELERATION SENSOR SIGNAL AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor harness connector.
- Disconnect the related ORC harness connector.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the standard key ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the keyless ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Disconnect the 12-volt battery wait two minutes before proceeding, remove the ORC fuses, connect the 12-volt battery, wait two minutes before proceeding. Cycle the ignition to the On position, then reconnect the ORC fuses. Wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Measure the voltage of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor Signal circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor harness connector and ground.
- Measure the voltage of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor Ground circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor harness connector and ground.
Is there any voltage present?
Yes
- Repair the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor circuit(s) for a short to voltage.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT / ACCELERATION SENSOR SIGNAL AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Measure the resistance of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor Signal circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor harness connector and ground.
- Measure the resistance of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor Ground circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor harness connector and ground.
Is there continuity between ground and the circuit(s) being tested?
Yes
- Repair the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor circuit(s) for a short to ground.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 4
- CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT / ACCELERATION SENSOR SIGNAL AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER NOTE:
At this time of the diagnostic testing process, the
ORC is disconnected
and the
ignition is OFF
.
- Measure the resistance between the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor Signal and Sensor Ground circuits at Impact / Acceleration Sensor harness connector.
Is there continuity between the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor circuits?
Yes
- Repair the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor circuits for a shorted together.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 5
- Measure the resistance between the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor Signal and Sensor Ground circuits at Impact / Acceleration Sensor harness connector.
- CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT / ACCELERATION SENSOR SIGNAL AND GROUND CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN OR HIGH RESISTANCE NOTE:
At this time of the diagnostic testing process, the ORC is still disconnected and the ignition is OFF.
- Measure the resistance of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor Signal circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor harness connector and the ORC Module body harness connector.
- Measure the resistance of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor Ground circuit between the appropriate terminal of the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor harness connector and the ORC Module body harness connector.
Is the resistance below 0.5 Ohm on both circuits?
Yes
- Go To 6
No
- Repair the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor circuit(s) for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE RELATED IMPACT / ACCELERATION SENSOR
- Replace the related Impact / Acceleration Sensor in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to SENSOR, IMPACT, REMOVAL .
- Reconnect the vehicle body harness to the related impact / acceleration sensor.
- Remove any special tools or jumper wires and reconnect all previously disconnected components - except the Battery.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the standard key ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Turn the ignition on, then reconnect the 12-volt battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- If the vehicle is equipped with the keyless ignition, follow this ignition on warning.WARNING:
Disconnect the 12-volt battery wait two minutes before proceeding, remove the ORC fuses, connect the 12-volt battery, wait two minutes before proceeding. Cycle the ignition to the On position, then reconnect the ORC fuses. Wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Connect the scan tool to the Data Link Connector - use the most current software available.
- Use the scan tool and erase the stored codes in all airbag system modules.
- Turn the Ignition Off, and wait 15 seconds before turning the Ignition On.
- Wait one minute, and read active codes and if there are none present read the stored codes.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Go To 7
No
- Repair is complete.
- Perform the RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK RELATED HARNESS CONNECTIONS WARNING:
Turn the ignition off, disconnect the battery and wait two minutes before proceeding. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
WARNING:If the Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) is dropped at any time, it must be replaced. Failure to take the proper precautions could result in accidental airbag deployment. Failure to follow these instructions may result in possible serious or fatal injury.
- Disconnect all Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) harness connectors.
- Disconnect all related in-line harness connections (if equipped).
- Disconnect the related component harness connectors.
- Inspect harness connectors, component connectors, and all male and female terminals for the following conditions:
- Proper connector installation.
- Damaged connector locks.
- Corrosion.
- Other signs of water intrusion.
- Weather seal damage (if equipped).
- Bent terminals.
- Overheating due to a poor connection (terminal may be discolored due to excessive current draw).
- Terminals that have been pushed back into the connector cavity.
- Check for spread terminals and verify proper terminal tension.
Repair any conditions that are found.
- Connect all Occupant Restraint Controller (ORC) harness connectors. Be certain that all harness connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all in-line harness connectors (if equipped). Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- Connect all related component harness connectors. Be certain that all connectors are fully seated and the connector locks are fully engaged.
- With the scan tool, erase DTCs.
- Test drive or operate the vehicle in accordance with the when monitored and set conditions.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs.
Did the DTC return?
Yes
- Replace and program the Occupant Restraint Controller in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, OCCUPANT RESTRAINT CONTROLLER, REMOVAL .
- Perform the VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- The wiring or poor connection problem has been repaired.
- Perform the Occupant Restraint Controller VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to RESTRAINTS SYSTEM VERIFICATION TEST .
