Diagnostic Test
WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
- CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC NOTE:
Diagnose and repair any system voltage DTCs before continuing with this test.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read DTCs and record on the repair order.
Is the DTC active or pending?
Yes
- Go To 2
No
- Perform the INTERMITTENT CONDITION diagnostic procedure. Refer to INTERMITTENT CONDITION .
- CHECK THE (K2) ECT SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the ECT Sensor harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- Measure the voltage on the (K2) ECT Signal circuit in the ECT Sensor harness connector.
Is the voltage above 5.2 volts?
Yes
- Repair the short to voltage in the (K2) ECT Signal circuit.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 3
- CHECK THE (K2) ECT SIGNAL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Turn the ignition off.
- Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.CAUTION:
Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.
- Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
- Measure the resistance of the (K2) ECT Signal circuit between the ECT Sensor harness connector to the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 4
No
- Repair the (K2) ECT Signal circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- CHECK THE (K915) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
- Measure the resistance of the (K915) Sensor ground circuit between the ECT Sensor harness connector to the GPEC Adaptor.
Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?
Yes
- Go To 5
No
- Repair the (K915) Sensor ground circuit for an open or high resistance.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
- Measure the resistance of the (K915) Sensor ground circuit between the ECT Sensor harness connector to the GPEC Adaptor.
- ECT SENSOR
- Reconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
- Connect a jumper between the (K2) ECT Signal circuit and the (K915) Sensor ground circuit in the ECT harness connector.
- Turn the ignition on.
- With the scan tool, read ECT voltage.NOTE:
The P0117-ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CIRCUIT LOW DTC should display as active or pending with the jumper in place.
Does the scan tool display as described above?
Yes
- Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the ECT Sensor and Powertrain Control Module connectors. If no problems are found, replace the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor. Refer to SENSOR, COOLANT TEMPERATURE, REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Go To 6NOTE:
Remove the jumper before continuing.
- POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM)
- Using the wiring diagram/schematic as a guide, inspect the wiring and connectors between the ECT Sensor and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
- Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
- Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the ECT Sensor and Powertrain Control Module connectors.
- Perform any Service Bulletins that may apply.
Were there any problems found?
Yes
- Repair as necessary.
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
No
- Replace and program the Powertrain Control Module in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to MODULE, POWERTRAIN CONTROL (PCM), REMOVAL .
- Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
