Diagnostic Test

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
  1. CHECK FOR AN ACTIVE DTC
    NOTE:

If DTC P0013 is active, diagnose and repair that DTC before continuing before continuing with this test procedure.

    NOTE:

The most likely cause for this DTC to set is high friction in the valvetrain components such as the camshaft and valve springs.

    NOTE:

Diagnose and repair any system voltage DTCs before continuing with this test.

    1. Turn the ignition on.
    2. With the scan tool, read and record all DTCs and freeze frame data in the PCM for future reference.
    3. With the scan tool, erase DTCs in the PCM.
    4. Test drive the vehicle under the conditions in which the DTC was set.
    5. With the scan tool, read DTCs.

Is the DTC active or pending at this time?

      Yes

      • Go To  2

      No

  2. ENGINE OIL/ENGINE MECHANICAL
    1. The following items should be checked before continuing with this procedure. Failure to do so may lead to misdiagnosis.
      • LOW ENGINE OIL LEVEL
      • INCORRECT ENGINE OIL FILTER (DOES NOT MEET OEM SPECIFICATIONS)
      • DETERIORATED OR DIRTY OIL
      • CONTAMINATED ENGINE OIL
      • INCORRECT ENGINE OIL VISCOSITY
      • AERATED ENGINE OIL
      NOTE:

If the engine oil is contaminated, inspect the Camshaft Position Solenoid for contamination, foreign material or any condition that would restrict movement of the valve. The solenoid must be replaced if damaged or if valve movement is restricted due to contamination.

Were any of the above conditions present?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  3
  3. CHECK THE ENGINE OIL PRESSURE AND ENGINE MECHANICAL CONDITION
    1. Install an oil pressure gauge and check the engine oil pressure in accordance with the Service Information. Refer to CHECKING ENGINE OIL PRESSURE .
      NOTE:

With the scan tool, compare the engine oil pressure reading on the gauge with the scan tool reading at different engine speeds. If the pressure reading on the scan tool is not close to what the gauge displays, perform the diagnostic procedure for P0521-ENGINE OIL PRESSURE SENSOR PERFORMANCE.

    2. Check the engine mechanical condition (i.e. proper oil drain back, oil sludge, etc.)

      Were any problems found?

      Yes

      No

      • Go To  4
  4. VARIABLE CAM TIMING (VCT) SOLENOID CONTROL ACTUATION
    1. Turn the ignition on.
      NOTE:

The VCT Solenoid actuates whenever the ignition key is turned on for cleaning purposes. This actuation also take place when the engine stops. So if you are testing the solenoid with a test light it is possible that you will see the solenoid actuate at key on and engine stop.

    2. With the scan tool, actuate the VVT Exhaust Phaser 1 control to toggle on and off.
    3. Listen for the VCT Solenoid to click open and closed during the actuation.

Does the Variable Cam Timing Solenoid click open and closed during the actuation?

      Yes

      • Go To  9

      No

      • Go To  5
  5. CHECK THE (K442) VCT CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
    NOTE:

The VCT Slow Response monitor should be suspended when a VCT Control circuit fault is detected. However it is possible for the monitors to overlap and fail. Therefore the circuits should be checked before condemning and replacing any of the VCT components.

    1. Turn the ignition off
    2. Disconnect the VCT Solenoid harness connector.
    3. Disconnect the PCM C2 harness connector.
    4. Check for continuity between ground and the (K442) VCT Control circuit at the VCT Solenoid harness connector.

Is the continuity between ground and the (K442) VCT Control circuit?

      Yes

      • Repair the (K442) VCT Control circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .

      No

      • Go To  6
  6. CHECK THE (K442) VCT CONTROL CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    CAUTION:

Do not probe the PCM harness connectors. Probing the PCM harness connectors will damage the PCM terminals resulting in poor terminal to pin connection. Install the GPEC Diagnostic Adaptor to perform the diagnosis.

    1. Connect the (special tool #10436, Adapter, GPEC Diagnostic).
    2. Measure the resistance of the (K442) VCT Control circuit between the VCT Solenoid harness connector and the GPEC Adaptor.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  7

      No

      • Repair the (K442) VCT Control circuit for a short to ground.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  7. CHECK THE GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN/HIGH RESISTANCE
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Measure the resistance of the Ground circuit at the VCT Solenoid harness connector.

Is the resistance below 3.0 Ohms?

      Yes

      • Go To  8

      No

      • Repair the excessive resistance or open in the Ground circuit.
      • Perform the POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST. Refer to POWERTRAIN VERIFICATION TEST .
  8. VARIABLE CAM TIMING (VCT) SOLENOID
    1. Turn the ignition off.
    2. Inspect the wiring and connectors between the VCT Solenoid and the Powertrain Control Module (PCM).
    3. Look for any chafed, pierced, pinched or partially broken wires.
    4. Look for broken, bent, pushed out or corroded terminals.
    5. Verify that there is good pin to terminal contact in the VCT Solenoid and Powertrain Control Module connectors.
    6. Remove the VCT Solenoid in accordance with the Service Information.
    7. Inspect the VCT Solenoid for contamination, foreign material, or any condition that would restrict movement of the valve.
