Section 2 (5.7L Engine (Service Information) (1 Of 2)): Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different variant/trim than selected.
CAUTION:

If the engine encounters a catastrophic failure, the engine oil cooler and lines must be replaced or damage to the new engine or components could result.

CAUTION:

If the original engine has experienced a catastrophic failure or an individual failure with the piston, cylinder bore, engine block, valve or valve seat, the intake manifold MUST be replaced with a new manifold.

  1. Remove the hood. Refer to HOOD, REMOVAL .
  2. Remove the oil fill cap (1).
  3. Remove the engine cover (2).

  4. Perform the fuel pressure release procedure. Refer to FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE .
  5. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery cable (2).
  6. Remove the air cleaner and resonator assembly. Refer to BODY, AIR CLEANER, REMOVAL  .

  7. Remove the cowl panel cover (2). Refer to COVER, COWL PANEL, REMOVAL .

    CAUTION:

    When servicing or replacing exhaust system components, disconnect the oxygen sensor connector(s). Allowing the exhaust to hang by the oxygen sensor wires will damage the harness or sensor.

  8. Disconnect the left upstream 02 sensor electrical connector (1).

  9. Disconnect the right upstream 02 sensor electrical connector (1).
  10. Raise and support the vehicle.
  11. Drain the cooling system.

  12. If equipped, remove the skid plate four retaining bolts (2) and remove the skid plate (1).

  13. Remove the lower radiator hose clamp (1) at the water pump.
  14. Remove the lower radiator hose clamp (2) at the radiator and remove the lower radiator hose (3).

  15. Remove the left catalytic converter heat shield retaining bolts (1) and remove the heat shield (2).
  16. Remove both exhaust pipe/catalytic converters. Refer to CONVERTER, CATALYTIC, REMOVAL .

  17. Remove the starter (1). Refer to STARTER, REMOVAL .
    NOTE:

    It is not necessary to disconnect the refrigerant lines for A/C compressor removal.

  18. Remove the A/C compressor from the engine block and position aside. Refer to COMPRESSOR, A/C, REMOVAL .

  19. Remove both engine mount (1) retaining nuts (2).
  20. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from their retainer at the oil pan.

  21. Lower the vehicle.
  22. Remove the upper radiator hose clamp (1) at the thermostat housing and remove hose.
  23. Remove the upper radiator hose retainer (2) at the fan shroud and position the radiator hose aside.

  24. Remove both heater hose clamps (1).
  25. Remove both heater hoses (2) and position aside.

  26. Remove the cooling fan module (1). Refer to FAN, COOLING, REMOVAL .
  27. Remove the generator. Refer to GENERATOR, REMOVAL .

  28. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to MANIFOLD, INTAKE, REMOVAL .
    NOTE:

    The engine must be at room temperature before removing the oil control valve.

  29. Disconnect the oil control valve electrical connector (1).
  30. Remove the oil control valve retaining bolt (2).
  31. Rotate the oil control valve (3) to break the seal then pull the oil control valve straight out.

    NOTE:

    Do not use air tools to install the Engine Lift Fixture (special tool #8984C, Fixture, Engine Lifting).

  32. Install the Engine Lift Fixture (special tool #8984C, Fixture, Engine Lifting) (1).
  33. Securely tighten lifting fixture mounting bolts (2).
  34. Raise and support the vehicle.

  35. Remove the structural dust cover retaining bolts (1).
  36. Remove the structural dust cover (2).

  37. Remove the flexplate-to-torque converter retaining bolts (1).

    4x4 rear engine mount isolator shown, 4x2 rear engine mount isolator similar. 

  38. Loosen but do not remove the rear engine mount isolator retaining bolts (1).
  39. Using a suitable transmission hydraulic jack, slightly raise the transmission and support the front of the transmission using a block of wood between the transmission and engine cradle crossmember.
  40. Remove the transmission hydraulic jack.

  41. Remove the transmission bell housing to engine block bolts (2).
  42. Lower the vehicle.

  43. Disconnect all remaining left and right engine harness electrical connectors and position the harness over to the right side of vehicle.
  44. Connect a suitable engine lifting devise to the Engine Lift Fixture (special tool #8984C, Fixture, Engine Lifting) (1).
  45. Separate the engine from the transmission and remove the engine from the vehicle.

    CAUTION:

    Do not allow the engine to rest on the oil pan, the composite oil pan will not support the weight of the engine, damage to the oil pan or engine assembly may occur.

  46. Place the engine on a suitable engine stand.
