Panel, Instrument: Removal

WARNING:

Disable the airbag system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the airbag system. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment and possible serious or fatal injury.

NOTE:

Take the proper precautions to protect the front face of the instrument panel from cosmetic damage during this service procedure.

  1. Disconnect the heater hoses from the heater core.
  2. Disconnect and position aside the evaporator lines at the cowl panel.
  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable (3). Refer to CABLES, BATTERY, REMOVAL .

  4. Position the front wheels of vehicle (and steering wheel) in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position. This action will help keep the clock spring properly centered for reinstallation.
  5. Remove the steering column opening cover fasteners (1).

  7. Remove fasteners (1 and 2) and kick panel (3).

  8. Remove the four screws (1) attaching the lower shroud to the upper shroud. After removing the screws, unclip the upper and lower shrouds from one another by applying hand pressure along the seams where the shrouds connect on the sides.

  9. Remove the two screws (1) attaching the upper shroud to the column.

  10. Remove the remaining screw (1) attaching the upper shroud (2) to the column.
  11. Push the tilt lever upward, locking the column in place.

  12. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors (2) at the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM).

  13. Remove the intermediate shaft coupling bolt (2).
  14. Separate the intermediate shaft (1) at the base of the column from the shaft extension.
  15. Remove the wiring harness routing clips from the bottom of the Steering Column.

    NOTE:

    If the same steering column is to be reinstalled, clamp the tilt lever to lock the column in place so that it can be easily reinstalled in the same orientation.

  16. Remove the mounting bolts (1) attaching the steering column to the instrument panel.
  17. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.

  18. Using a small flat bladed tool, or equivalent remove the trim covers (2) and remove the fasteners (1).

  19. Remove the cup holder insert (1).

  21. Using (special tool #C-4755, Trim Stick) or equivalent, remove the cup holder trim panel (1).

  22. Remove the fasteners (1) and remove the cup holder trim support bracket (2).

  23. Remove the fasteners (1) and remove the lower trim.

  24. Remove the passenger side foot rest retainers and foot rest.
  25. Disconnect the electrical connectors that are found under the foot rest.
  26. Remove the fastener (1) and position the ground cable aside.

  27. Open the glove box door (2).
  28. Pull the release tabs (1) inward and release the door into the full down position.

  29. Remove the inner fastener (1).

  33. Disconnect the antenna leads and electrical connectors (1).

  34. Remove the shift bezel (1) and disconnect the electrical connector.
  35. Remove the shifter. Refer to SHIFTER, TRANSMISSION, REMOVAL .

  36. Remove the lower center support bolts (1).
  37. Separate the HVAC drain tube from the floor.

  38. Remove the fastener (1) and separate the hood release handle from the IP.

  39. Disconnect the cable from the lever (1) and separate the cable housing (2) remove the handle.

  40. Disconnect the electrical connectors (1) from the Body Control Module (BCM).

  41. Remove the bolts (2) and the nut (3) and remove the BCM.
  42. Disconnect the electrical connectors (1).

  43. Remove the bolts (1) and position the bracket (2) aside.

  44. Remove the fastener and remove the ground (1).

  45. Remove the fastener (2) and separate the bracket (1).
  46. Separate the harness retainers in the steering column opening and position the harness through the IP.

  47. Using a trim stick, remove the defroster grille (1).
  48. Remove the radio. Refer to RADIO, REMOVAL .

  50. Remove the side support bolts (2) and with the aid of a helper, remove the instrument panel assembly (1).
