Cover, Instrument Panel: Removal

WARNING:

Disable the airbag system before attempting any steering wheel, steering column or instrument panel component diagnosis or service. Disconnect and isolate the negative battery (ground) cable, then wait two minutes for the airbag system capacitor to discharge before performing further diagnosis or service. This is the only sure way to disable the airbag system. Failure to follow these instructions may result in accidental airbag deployment and possible serious or fatal injury.

NOTE:

Take the proper precautions to protect the front face of the instrument panel from cosmetic damage during this service procedure.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to CABLES, BATTERY, REMOVAL .

  2. Position the front wheels of vehicle (and steering wheel) in the STRAIGHT-AHEAD position. This action will help keep the clock spring properly centered for reinstallation.
  3. Remove the steering column opening cover fasteners (1).

  5. Remove fasteners (1 and 2) and kick panel (3).

  6. Remove the four screws (1) attaching the lower shroud to the upper shroud. After removing the screws, un-clip the upper and lower shrouds from one another by applying hand pressure along the seams where the shrouds connect on the sides.

  7. Remove the two screws (1) attaching the upper shroud to the column.

  8. Remove the remaining screw (1) attaching the upper shroud (2) to the column.
  9. Push the tilt lever upward, locking the column in place.

  10. Disconnect the wiring harness connectors (2) at the Steering Column Control Module (SCCM).

  11. Remove the intermediate shaft coupling bolt (2).
  12. Separate the intermediate shaft (1) at the base of the column from the shaft extension.
  13. Remove the wiring harness routing clips from the bottom of the Steering Column.

    NOTE:

    If the same steering column is to be reinstalled, clamp the tilt lever to lock the column in place so that it can be easily reinstalled in the same orientation.

  14. Remove the mounting bolts (1) attaching the steering column to the instrument panel.
  15. Remove the steering column from the vehicle.

  16. Using a small flat bladed tool, or equivalent remove the trim covers (2) and remove the fasteners (1).

  17. Remove the cup holder insert (1).

  19. Using (special tool #C-4755, Trim Stick) or equivalent, remove the cup holder trim panel (1).

  20. Remove the fasteners (1) and remove the cup holder trim support bracket (2).

  22. Grasp and slightly twist the top of the shifter boot (2) at the base of the shifter knob (1) to release the boot from the knob.

  23. Pull the shifter boot (3) down.
  24. Using a suitable tool pull the retention clip (2) out of the shifter knob (1).
  25. Pull up on the knob to remove.

  27. Disconnect harness connector (1) from the tow/haul switch.
  28. Remove the shifter bezel

  29. Open the glove box door (2).
  30. Pull the release tabs (1) inward and release the door into the full down position.

  31. Remove the inner fastener (1).

  35. Disconnect the antenna leads and electrical connectors (1).

  36. Remove the fasteners (1) and remove the upper glove box.
  37. Remove the passenger side air bag. Refer to AIR BAG, PASSENGER, REMOVAL .

  38. Remove the fasteners (1) and remove the instrument cluster bezel.

  43. Remove the radio. Refer to RADIO, REMOVAL .
