Switch, MULTIFUNCTION, Left: Description
The left multi-function switch is located on the left side of the steering column. The switch is the primary control for the exterior lighting system. The only visible components of the switch are the control stalk and the control knob that extends through the steering column shrouds. The remainder of the switch including its mounting provisions, its electrical connections, and the turn signal cancel actuator are concealed beneath the shrouds.
The switch housing and controls are constructed of molded black plastic. Each of the switch controls has white International Control and Display Symbol graphics applied to it, which clearly identify its many functions. The left (lighting) multi-function switch for this vehicle is integral to the clockspring and stalk unit.
The left multi-function switch provides the vehicle operator with a control interface for the following exterior lighting system functions:
- Main Lighting Switch (on wheel control)
- The control is located nearly at the end of the stalk and operated by turning a wheel control. All wheel control maneuvers are possible only with the left stalk in the low beam position. It is not possible to carry out the below operations with the stalk in the high beam position.
- Position 1 = Lamps off.
- Position 2 = Marker and Parking lamps.
- Position 3 = Auto lamp function, running lamps, park lamps and low beam operation.
- Light flasher/high beam control (on stalk)
- The left multi-function switch control stalk provides switching for selection of the headlamp high or low beams.
The left multi-function switch control stalk also includes momentary switching of the headlamp high beam circuits to provide an optical horn feature (sometimes referred to as flash-to-pass), which allows the vehicle operator to momentarily flash the headlamp high beams as an optical signaling device.
- Direction indicator and lane change control (on stalk) - The left multi-function switch control stalk includes momentary switching of the headlamp high beam circuits to provide an optical horn feature (sometimes referred to as flash-to-pass), which allows the vehicle operator to momentarily flash the headlamp high beams as an optical signaling device.
The left multi-function switch cannot be adjusted or repaired. If any function of the switch is ineffective, or if the switch is damaged, the entire clockspring and stalk unit, with both the left and right multi-function switches, must be replaced. Refer to CLOCKSPRING, REMOVAL .
